There are 2 task maps, each with 8 different independent tasks to go along with the novel, The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson. This book is in the grey book band. Task maps are based on Bloom’s questions and as such the questions/tasks are split into those six categories.
One task map will usually be enough to cover in a week/2 to 3 reading lessons, so I have used this with reading groups over the course of 2 weeks.
The novel is split as follows:
Task map 1: pages 1 to 53
Task map 2: pages 54 to the end
This resource contains 4 different worksheets to support the teaching of the Read Write Inc Orange Band Story 1 book, ‘Playday’. They could be used for independent activities within a reading lesson.
The different activities included within the worksheets are:
Choose the right word (sentences from the book)
Find words with a focus sound from the book
Answer comprehension questions (sentences modelled with blanks for answers)
Draw a picture relating to a topic from the book
Dots and dashes with Green Words
Read and draw words/phrases from the book
Read and write out Red Words from the book
Write own sentences with Green Words from the book
Although this is designed to be an independent activity, children may require some support to read some of the instructions on the sheet.
This resource is intended to be used by schools who have bought and use the Read Write Inc programme and accompanying resources, and pupils will need the book available whilst working on these tasks. These worksheets are not intended to replace any of the teaching elements of the Read Write Inc programme, but can support pupils who have completed the Read Write Inc lessons on this book, perhaps as part of a whole class reading lesson.
This unit of work has split up the novel into 7 sections so is designed to last 7 weeks however, this can be adapted to suit your learners. Please see the previews of the files to determine the sections of the book.
The resource contains a range of challenging vocabulary, quality discussion questions and a choice of follow-up tasks for each section of the book. I have used it in my classroom following the Highland Literacy Project’s way of organising reading in the upper primary classroom. Children engage in reading 3 times per week:
Session 1 - Pupils discuss the text, read the set pages independently and look up the vocabulary from the pages they have read.
Session 2 - Pupils discuss the pages read with their group and the teacher.
Session 3 - Pupils complete a follow-up task from the choices given to demonstrate further understanding.
When I have used this, I have printed a few pages of the document to share between pupils in the reading group, with tasks completed in jotters.
For example:
For Week 1, Session 1 - pupils use page 1 of the document.
For Week 1, Session 2 - pupils use page 2 of the document.
For Week 1, Session 3 - pupils use page 2 of the document, and so on.
I hope you find this resource useful, however you choose to use it!

This is a card game to help pupils learn vocabulary for weather terms in French. It could be used as a pairs/pelmanism game, snap game or simple matching game.
Cards have reverse side (which says “Quel temps fait-il?”) so can be printed double sided to prevent any cheating!! You need to change printer settings to “Flip on short side” as it is a landscape document.
Resource comes as Word document which can be edited and as a PDF which is ready to print.
This activity can be used to practise basic conversational French once pupils have learned how to ask and answer questions. It could also be used for revision purposes. It covers topics such as name, age, where you live, siblings, hobbies, hair colour, eye colour, birthdays and favourite colours.
Pupils take it in turns to ask and answer each other 10 different questions and record the responses on their sheets, in either French or English.
There is also a help sheet to go with the activity if necessary.
