This ppt is for an activity I conducted with our soon-to-be year 7s on their transistion visit. It's a facilitated activity that encourages the pupils to (i) share their perceptions of the benefits of learning a language (ii) think about how learning a language will devlop their generic thinking and learning abilities (iii) reflect on how an MFL lesson, which they have just had, has fostered generic thinking and learning skills. It could be used with Year 7s at the start of their MFL career.

Powerpoint story in which Bella from the 'Twighlight' series describes a typical day. The text appears slowly, giving students time to read and work out the meanings. As a follow up you could ask the class for ideas, such as likes and dislikes, to augment the text on each slide and make the story their own.

Reading comprehension activity. I have jumbled up an account of the plot of Mr Bean's holiday. Students have to read the eight mini-texts and put them in the correct order. Helpful, but not absolutely essential, to have seen the film. I have provided a solution and the original text. As a follow-up students could put the text into the first person or into the past tense or both.

Structured multi-choice writing task to help students writea text about their town.

A number of short excerpts from reviews of the the film. Students must identify the references to the themes in each review. This is followed by a Diamond Nine card sort in which students must discuss the themes and agree which are more important and which are less important.

Higher Level text about changes pupils would introduce to their school experience if they were in charge. Text is followed by a ' find the phrase' exercise focusing on the Conditional, a table showing the formation of the Condtional, a manipulation exercise, and a writing task. A number of short texts based on an internet discussion about how best to celebrate a birthday. The texts are followed with comprehension questions, 'find the phrase' activities, manipulation activities, mini grammar points, and culminate in a writing activity.
