Nandos Takeaway Menu, linked to researching education in a Francophone country. Fully differentiated with Lemon & Herb (least challenging), Mild, Hot and Extra Hot (most challenging) tasks. Tasks link to 'Basic information, Climate and Geography', 'History, Culture and People', 'Environmental Issues, Human Rights and Government' and 'Education' respectively, with three sub-topics under each bracket. Excellent starter double-pack, easily amended for use time and time again with any year group. Learners are asked to form as many infinitives as they can in a given time limit using the Scrabble tiles in the first starter. Differentiated through forming the highest or lowest-scoring infinitive, through finding modal verbs, and through teacher support for the first examples and first letter of several other infinitives if necessary. Easily adapted to link to any area of the curriculum (not just verbs), and a great individual or pair whiteboard warm-up. Learners can work together, compete against each-other in groups, and can also be trained to think of their own objective (for example colours, French regions or connectives) using letters that they provide. Students also really enjoy 'beat the teacher' at this game - playing against you in the same time limit with letters that they have provided! The word octagon, based on the popular daily puzzle in The Times newspaper, asks learners to find the two adjectives within the shape, using the letter at the centre for each one and every other letter no more than once. Fabulous for engaging higher-order thinking skills. There are two octagons with two adjectives in on this slide. Again, very simply adapted.

Fantastic double-sided table of French classroom language. Huge time-saver and incredibly useful to encourage use of the target-language in lessons. Really helpful to introduce at the start of the year (or at any stage as a 'I think you're ready for this now...'). Can be printed as a big display poster, as A4 or A5 sheets and laminated as a reference point for students on classroom tables, or as an individual sheet to refer to. As well as classroom language, sheet also includes Days of the Week, Months of the Year, Numbers (overview of 1 - 1,000,000), Articles and Useful words (who, what, where, why etc. and connectives). Huge time saver! Useful with any age.

Excellent resource, introducing the near future tense through the 'aller' song, with a clear table to demonstrate formation. Text message conversation between Simon and Carly of The Inbetweeners engages students and asks them to answer a series of questions designed to test their understanding of the tense. HA stretched through identification and translations of colloquialisms such as 'ma biche'. Mini-whiteboard translation activity follows to gauge understanding, and a plenary with 12 sentences to translate is the last slide. This can be printed, cut up, and used in a box as a 'Pass-the-Parcel' style game, learners could throw die to determine the phrase that they translate to their partner, or in any number of different ways. LA supported through use of lesson worksheet (print table on first slide for learners to complete), HA through extension with colloquialisms and perfect tense. Excellent for introduction at KS3 and for revision / review at KS4.

Differentiated number-challenge starter (one slide), presenting learners with three levels of puzzle increasing in difficulty. Students are given a number at the start of each puzzle and asked to work out a series of sums (all in French) to end up with the final answer. Puzzles very similar to daily 'Brain Trainer' challenge in The Times. All animations and answers on slide. Puzzles use double and triple-figure numbers, therefore most suitable for HA KS3 / KS4. Excellent numeracy and cross-curricular links between MFL and maths. A great time saver, took an hour make and format! Can be adapted and used over and over again with different ages. 'Challenge' option asks students to research the difference between 'chiffre', 'nombre' and 'numéro'.

Paralympic Games Assembly, linked to values. Suitable for Primary and Secondary. Fully animated with links in 'Notes' section for assembly giver. 10 slides in total, referencing the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, the London 2012 Paralympic Games and the Rio 2016 Paralympic games. Easily adapted if required. The assembly begins by asking students to draw link between seven images - the official Paralympic mascots and logos for each of the games listed above, and the official logo for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games. Slide 2 explains who each of the mascots are to students, and asks students to consider which values each of these mascots have been designed to represent and how the artist has achieved this. With older year groups, students could be invited to reflect on a wider ranger of issues - do these mascots achieve their aims? If not, why not? Who are the mascots designed to appeal to and why? How could they be more effective if students consider that they are not currently? A little more information is then given about each mascot and the values they were designed to exemplify. Slides 3 and 4 link to Channel 4 Rio 2016 Paralympic Games trailer and ask students to consider which qualities they see represented in the trailer. Trailer is signed and subtitled. Slides 5 - 9 feature two embedded videos and questions / discussion points for interviews with Matt Stuzman (Team USA Archery, also known as the 'Armless Archer'), and an interview with Ibrahim Hamato (Team Egypt Table Tennis, the competitor that plays with his mouth). Slide 10 asks students what they can learn from assembly, whether they have been inspired in any way, and how they may incorporate one or more of the values they have seen embodied in clips into their days.

Excellent cultural resource, working on Le Tour de France. Text outlines the competition, the history of the competition and the course that the cyclists follow. Support LA learners with vocabulary sheet if required and stretch HA learners with a ‘Challenge’ extension activity - a mini research project into the significance of the different jerseys. A French website is suggested as a first access point. A brilliant lesson that can branch off in to many different areas (researching winners, the different regions that the course crosses, anti-doping etc.) depending on level of group.

Excellent resource, based on the popular BBC show 'Only Connect'. Works well as a starter, plenary or as a game to review learning. Students are asked to apply critical thinking skills to make links between fourteen different French verbs or phrases in each game. The first game focuses on infinitives and present tense conjugations, the second on infinitives and infinitive constructions, and the third on the perfect and imperfect tenses. Instructions for teachers on each slide, fully animated with all answers and hyperlinks. Fully differentiated. Slides at the end of the PowerPoint are set up to input own vocabulary too. Can be used in lots of different ways! Always great fun!

Excellent first lesson of the year, comprehensively covering slide-by-slide all that you need your new class to know in an accessible and fun way. Helps you to get to know your students, and helps them to get to know each-other too, setting them up for some great learning. Also gets you off to a brilliant start with your expectations through a whole-class ‘Partnership Agreement’ that they create and sign. I use this template every year with every class that I teach and it always works brilliantly. They have a lot of fun, as do you, and you also get all of the bits sorted that you need to without missing anything out (an overview of the year, books, seating plan etc.) which is easily done at the start of a busy term.
