Disciplinary Literacy resource/task describing Newton’s Laws of motion. Answers provided. Supplied as editable powerpoint file (.ppt) and PDF, complete with answer slides. This is a reading comprehension task (around an A4 page) featuring a short passage describing Newton’s Laws and giving examples of when they apply, followed by a definition task for the tier 3 vocabulary introduced, and 10 ramped recall and application questions on page 2. This resource is designed to match the AQA Combined Science and single science Physics specification for the Forces topic (P5). It could be used to either introduce Newton’s Laws of motion early in the topic, or later for consolidation, revision and retrieval. The resource easily be adapted to other exam boards (such as Edexcel) and International curriculum of other countries. I would recommend guiding the students to read through once independently, then read through aloud to promote oracy, then allowing students to answer questions. Three “Shed Loads of Practice” (SLOP) worksheets to give students the opportunity to independently practice calculations using the equation Weight = Mass x Gravitational field strength. 22 Questions are provided in total, each with worked solutions and multiple worked examples to support both teachers and learners. Students are supported to show full working and solutions follow the FIFA (Formula, Insert, Fine tune, Answer) routine to help improve the mathematical skills of Substitution, unit conversion, rearrangement and using significant figures. This resource ramps up in difficulty through 3 leveled worksheets; Foundation, Higher Tier and Extension questions, to help students stretch and challenge themselves in preparation for answering calculation questions from the P5 Forces topic which would be found on AQA Physics Paper 2 (Single and combined). The resource is also suitable and adaptable for other exam boards (including Edexcel, OCR and other international boards) Parts of this resource will be suitable for all abilities/prior attainment of student, and could be utilised as Classwork, Homework, Cover work or revision.
