KS3: Introduction to KS3 Reading skills - Harry Potter focused
An introductory unit suitable for Year 7 students - I taught it to top and bottom set (with differentiation) classes. It is designed to get kids using the basic PEE style structure to create a reading assessment-worthy response. I don't include all of the extracts I used - I photocopied straight from the texts in all honesty - but this is more than enough to get going.
Hope you find this useful.
A Level English Language and Literature: Paris Anthology
These resources assume prior knowledge on the part of the students - they will have covered the greater majority of the texts before hand.
The lessons go back and fill in the gaps. I try a few different things here in terms of approach. The "Mike and Sophia" extract guide is a guided annotation lesson; I'd be interested to see how classes respond to this.
AQA English Literature Paper 2 Modern Texts: An Inspector Calls (Higher ability student focused)
A series of lessons that I taught to top set KS4 students. Please note, the gaps between the first and fourth lessons are intentional as I had the students act out the play and answer the comprehension questions in the AQA Study Guide book.
Bundle
AQA English Language Paper 2 UBER-BUNDLE
4 separate resource , all of which cover AQA English Language Paper 2. Also, I've added in a data collation resource that allows you to track the data.
AQA English Language Introduction (Paper 1 Section A focus) with supporting Workbook.
A series of lessons and resources designed to introduce year 9 students to the wonders of the AQA English Language Exam. In these lessons, I deconstruct the Assessment Objectives in relation to each question on English Language Paper 1 Section A.
I use the old Sunlight on the Grass story “Anil” as the source text (strictly speaking, this falls outside of what the exam could focus on, but I figure in using these stories as I have all this knowledge about them that isn’t being used!).
06/06/19: I’ve updated this to include a workbook that mirrors the activities in the powerpoint. Just fed up of dishing out lined paper and/or exercise books that’ll only get used for a few weeks.
Lord of the Flies: Stage Zero - Starting Point
The first lesson of a SoW I have recently created to teach Lord of the Flies to Year 7. This is the first part; I refer you to the 'Following this Scheme' guide for instructions as to what to do next.
Please leave feedback if you find this Scheme useful or have any suggestions to make. Look for the remaining stages on here too...
Renaissance Poem, Play & Prose: Worksheets
A set of worksheets including comprehension questions and synopsis summaries of a play, prose and a poem. Each sheet has comprehension questions that lead the A level students towards understanding.
Still trying to get my head around this course so feedback would be appreciated as to how useful these resources are.
Lord of the Flies: Stage 1 - Reading (M - H)
Here you will find the reading lessons for my Lord of the Flies SoW for the mid to higher ability (Learning outcomes measured against Levels 4 - 6).
IMPORTANT: Lessons 6 and 7 use sound-clips which I couldn't upload - you will have to find suitable sound effects yourself.
Please feel free to add feedback and any suggestions.
Lord of the Flies: Stage Three - Writing
The third and final stage of my Lord of the Flies SoW. I am still adding in alternative lessons to this so expect some changes. The writing assessment focuses on a letter-in-a-bottle activity. As you can see, there is heavy emphasis on punctuation.
Feedback welcome.
The handwriting lesson is based upon a workbook i found on TES - I take no credit for it!
Poetry: Cultural Poetry Investigation PART 1
The first part of a poetic investigation using all those old copies of the AQA anthology from yesteryear. The assessment is designed to focuse on RAF2,3,5 and 7. Each poem is split into two lessons; the first focusing on the cultural aspects and the second on the language. ALL of these power points are rendered in pink to allow Dyslexic students to read them without the text glaring. Second part to follow....
DAZ 4 ZOE Assessment Pack
Shows lessons building up to a reading assessment looking at RAF 2,3,4 and 5. These lessons are targeted at a top set Year 8 class with levels ranging from 5 - 7.
PEE and PETER sheets
I take no credit for the creation of these (probably by now ) universal acronyms. However, with a lot of my classes i find providing them with this sheet a good starting point. Use PEE sheets for lower ability students in KS3 and 4. Use PETER sheets for higher ability students in KS3 and 4.
Creative Writing - The Mysteries of Harris Burdick
A series of lessons exploring a variety of different writing styles (using David Lodge's 'The Art of Fiction' as inspiration) then targetting L5,6 and 7 for EACH of the Writing Assessment Focuses. You will need a copy of the OLD AQA Anthology (The one with Limbo on the first page). Dracula, Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire, Catcher in the Rye and a copy of 'The Mysteries of Harris Burdick' Portfolio (Images can be downloaded, but it costs about £13 from ebay). TOP SET Yr 8 lessons.
GCSE Literature: Character and Voice
I shall add to this as i create my power points. They will all follow the AQA Working with the Anthology Achieve a C textbook. Hope they prove useful to some.
Spoken Language structured response worksheets
Using the PEE format I've made user friendly sheets specifically relating to Spoken Language to help students plan and structure their responses. These are useful if the students are familiar with the terminology first.
GCSE Exam Revision Material (2010 onwards)
OK - the power point (Lesson 6) is actually a FOUR hour revision session. The two other worksheets are the articles and worksheets required to complete the lesson. You'd also need mini-white boards, whiteboard pens and post-it notes to run this lesson right off. Hope this will prove useful.
KS4 - Shakespeare and Conflict Poetry - FEELINGS
A series of lessons designed to teach Year 10-11 students about Shakespeare and how he presents feelings. This unit is pointed at a controlled assessment question that focuses on how Shakespeare and the conflict poetry POETS present ideas about feelings - poetry lessons to follow.
Lord of the Flies: Stage 1 - Reading (L-M)
Here you will find the reading lessons for my Lord of the Flies SoW for the low to mid ability (Learning outcomes measured against Levels 3 - 5).
IMPORTANT: Lessons 6 and 7 use sound-clips which I couldn't upload - you will have to find suitable sound effects yourself.
Please feel free to add feedback and any suggestions.
The Truman Show
The power points and worksheets build upon the attached pdf SoW (not my work - but i include it for you). The power points work through the trailers and the film with targeted comprehension questions. These were built with a mixed ability Year 9 group in mind.
