A quick revision task to assess responsibility for causing tension in the period c.1890-1914, and the outbreak of WWI.

A number of resources looking at the causes of the Great War. Numerous resources covering the formation of the Alliance Systems (1870-1914), Militarism, Imperialism and Nationalism (Balkan Wars and 1914 assassination) etc. Revision activities and numerous possible exam questions included.

A simple, yet effective resource looking at the factors behind Stalin's eventual victory in the power struggle following Lenin's death. Revision tasks included.

A two/three lesson resource looking at they battles of the Civil War. Pupils create a living graph (from the perspective of a Royalist or Parliamentarian) to map out the course of the war from their point of view (using the key found on the battle map). Card sorting activity to help them categorise the factors that made the Royalists weaker and the Parliamentarians stronger as the war progressed. An extended writing (PEEL) activity at the end to allow pupils to show their knowledge and understanding of the key question. Enjoy!

I have seen many excellent topic specific examples (e.g. Tudors or Great War etc.), but this can be used as a generic one for most GCSE Year 10 papers, and will therefore reduce photocopying costs etc. Your exam board will probably ask different questions in the MAINS section, but tis should be easily adaptable. As the highest ranking officer to die at the Battle of Waterloo, Picton was considered a hero within the British Army. In 1916, a statue was erected in his honour in Cardiff’s Marble Hall for Welsh heroes, but many consider his inclusion an insult. This task asks pupils to assess the life and achievements of Thomas Picton, and consider whether or not his statue should be amongst such notable individuals as Hywel Dda, Giraldus Cambrensis and Owain Glyndwr.

A resource to develop pupils understanding of how and why people have different interpretations of events, or in this case, individuals in History. Pupils watch a news bulletin from 2010 to find out about the basics of what H M Stanley did, and to realise people have different opinions of what this man achieved. Differentiated tasks provide challenge towards the higher ability range. This has proven very successful and popular with my classes. This could also be adapted easily for Primary school pupils.
