Civil Rights Scheme of work
High quality bundle of lessons that could (if you wanted to) lead to an end of topic assessment. The lessons cover:
Segregations
Brown V BOE
Emmett Till
Greensboro Sit-In
Different attitudes to the Civil Rights movement
Martin Luther King and Black Power
All focused around the enquiry of which factor was most important in achieving Civil Rights?
Why do we celebrate Pride?
A lesson on pride from a historical perspective; considering why the Pride Movement emerged and what movements and organisations were doing and asking for. Also covers responses to their actions and the issues around Aids.
Why didn't Legal Equality make Women Equal?
A lesson considering why legislation alone did not make women equal. It looks at the issues facing women in the 20th century onwards and covers case study movements to improve attitudes towards women, to fix some of the problems and to get closet to equality.
Did Martin Luther King Inspire a Movement?
A lesson on how significant Martin Luther King was to the Civil Rights movement. This ties together all parts of the movement for Civil Rights to draw a conclusion on whether it was MLK who deserves the credit or something/someone else. This could be adapted to be an end of unit assessment using historical sources.
Why were there different attitudes in the fight for Civil Rights?
A lesson covering the different attitudes to achieving Civil Rights in America. This includes the growth, popularity and tactics of Martin Luther King Jr, as well as the more radical Black Power movement.
The Greensboro Sit-In
A lesson on the Greensboro sit-in, covering the causes, the events and the consequences of the protest. As well as putting its significance into the wider context of the Civil Rights movement.
How successful was the Montgomery Bus Boycott?
A lesson on the arrest of Rosa Parks and the bus boycott that followed; concluding with whether the boycott should be considered a success or not. The lesson also covers Claudette Colvin who was also arrested for refusing to leave her seat and a discussion on why she wasn’t as famous as Rosa Parks for doing so.
The murder of Emmett Till
An investigative lesson on the murder of Emmett Till and how his death inspired others in the Civil Rights movement. There is a source activity for students to work out what happened in 1955. The slides then go through the murder and aftermath, including the trial and public reaction. The lesson ends on how Till’s death inspired Rosa Parks. There is the option to get students to write a newspaper article surrounding Till. Lesson plan included. My students have always enjoyed this lesson!
Segregation in America and Brown V BOE
A lesson on the segregation of American based on race under the ‘Jim Crow’ laws. I use the lesson as an introduction to a scheme of work on the Civil Rights movement. The lesson contains a case study of Brown V The Board of Education to exemplify how the African American community challenged the laws on segregation.
Resilience - assembly or form time activity
An assembly I put together on the importance of resilience. It is based around the film ‘The Swimmers’ on Netflix, which follows two sisters - Yusra and Sara - who fled Syria and still manged to compete at the Rio Olympics. I linked this to my schools values and the importance of never giving up! Helps if you have watched the film but you can easily find the story online too.
