The course is designed to prepare students for writing assignments at university, as that is the key skill required by the majority of majors.

A fun game designed to review the 21 of the characters featured in the classic To Kill a Mockingbird.
This PPT has students working in teams to answer questions on who characters are based on a one sentence description. For example - “I am much older than I appear” withe the answer of course being Calpurnia.

A 25 question multiple choice quiz to introduce ESL students to the idea that words have multiple meanings, and they change over time. This quiz focuses on words that had new meanings in the 1950s, and are still in use today. I did deliberately chose not to use too much dated slang, and for words like ‘bread’ the alternatives are also definitions for bread, but they are formal ones.

A speaking activity designed to fill a 45 minute ESL class if used in the correct way. Students are ‘lost in the jungle’, and then must decide what items are essential in pairs. Then joining with another pair to narrow the list down until eventually the class has their five essential items. It should provide for a lively discussion. It is aimed at intermediate level students, but would work with higher level students too.
Students are presented with the classic sinking ship situation and they must choose who gets to go in the life boat. Included is a ppt to introduce the situation and the available passengers to choose from, along with a handout for the students detailing the passengers. It should provide for a lively debate between intermediate and above students.

The title pretty much says everything you need to know. This is meant as a quick filler activity to use up the last five minutes of class. It is a vocabulary review activity/game to cover topics and words that have already been taught.
The quite well known counting game adapted for an ESL class, and put into powerpoint to allow students to quickly grasp the format of the game. It is presented in three levels to build students familiarity with the concept.
