Applications are invited from experienced teachers who wish to develop their career within a very supportive environment which focuses on your professional development. You may be considering a first-time department leadership role or be an existing 2nd in department looking for a new challenge and an opportunity to develop professionally in anticipation of a Head of Department role.

Amongst other things, Outwood Academy Carlton offer:

  • The opportunity to work and progress across the Family of Schools.
  • The chance to apply for leadership roles in the Deeps working across the whole Academy.
  • The support and expertise of our Directors of Science working across the Family of Schools.
  • All staff are guaranteed a minimum of two hours CPD per week.
  • A further comprehensive programme of professional development provided through Outwood Institute of Education (formerly the Teaching School).

Understanding the importance of excellent learning and teaching, you will have a genuine regard for young people and high professional standards.

Achieving Academy status in February 2016 as part of the Outwood Grange Academies Trust, Outwood Academy Carlton is going from strength to strength. Based in the attractive village of Carlton, we offer an exceptional education and are enjoying significant improvement across every key measure and in every subject. In January 2019, Ofsted noted that “Leaders at all levels are resolute in their belief that pupils are entitled to the highest quality of education and this is reflected in their actions. Capacity for improvement in the future is strong”.

You can help us take things to the next level.

Outwood Academy Carlton is situated in North East Barnsley and is easily accessible from South and West Yorkshire, with Wakefield, Sheffield, Doncaster, Huddersfield and Pontefract all within commuting distance. We are just 5 miles from the M1.

If you care about the success of your students and colleagues, and have the energy and determination to make that success a reality, we would welcome your application.

If you would like any further information or would like to visit the Academy by arrangement, to see lessons and witness the rapid improvement that has already occurred, please contact The Head of Department: Gill McFadden g.mcfadden@carlton.outwood.com

The department consists of 9 teaching staff along with 2 technicians and 2 small group tutors. 2 of the teaching staff are in their third year of teaching having successfully completed their ECT training at Carlton. Teachers demonstrate good practice in the classroom and the department is developing into a stable team. Newer staff have made a positive contribution to the department and all play a role in leading a specific area of the curriculum, such as homework, science clubs, or praise. Results in triple science have remained positive, and those in combined science have made improvements in the number of grade 4s and 5s achieved. The curriculum has had significant improvements in the last three years and this is rapidly transforming KS3. There is regular departmental and whole school training to ensure that all aspects of our curriculum is implemented throughout years 7 to 11 with a particular focus on disciplinary skills, oracy and literacy.

The curriculum is followed and tracked with learning journeys and regular summative assessments that incorporate recap and recall and new knowledge covering a wide range of skills. Deep marking is developing with the use of waypoint assessments that aim to focus on the formative assessment of core and disciplinary knowledge that is required throughout the curriculum.
