Year 9 Mini GCSE Projects in preparation for GCSE Art in Year 10

(3)
The files uploaded here are small projects ideal for year 9's in the last term/half term that have chosen GCSE Art and Design. In each title there are approximately six tasks that are designed to be completed on separate A3 sheets. Some tasks are 3D.
On one side of the sheet is visuals of the artists linked to the title. Students can either read the tasks or look at the visual to determine which title they would like to explore. This resource can work alongside the GCSE Page by Page support sheet that uploaded as a separate resource for year 10/11.

Within this resource there is also a project log which helps students as they develop their ideas. The feedback log within the project log is for the student and the teacher to make comments and add guidance to support students. The criteria is linked to the draft AQA specification and will work well with year 9's to get them into the mindset of GCSE.

I hope you find this as useful as I do. My students really enjoy the freedom.
GCSE Art and Design Page by Page Support

(1)
This is a GCSE visual step-by-step "What to put onto each page" support sheet for students. It is a great resource for lower ability students to use exactly. Higher ability students can use it to support their ideas in the initial development stages. Most students use this sheet at the beginning of year 10 to help them explore how to develop a project but then move from it as they explore their ideas more independently throughout GCSE.

I have used this resource with year 9 students in the summer term who have opted for GCSE. Those students develop a 'mini' GCSE project of their choice whilst those that haven't chosen will remain in whole class tasks. Please see my 'Mini GCSE projects - suitable for Year 9' resource to support those year 9s.

Year 9 Optical Illusion Art Booklet

This is a superb resource for students to fully explore Op Art independently. The booklet gives examples and step by step instructions of how to complete Op Art examples.

This can be used as an additional learning task (Homework) or can be an entire project for students within their art lessons.

Year 8 Tessellation Low Relief MC Escher

This is a great project to help students understand tessellation. They also get to practice their shading skills. The project leads to a low relief that is worked into with a wide variety of materials. Students are to experiment with ideas in the booklet before they apply them to their low relief. My students are working on it at the moment and they love the freedom of experimenting with an idea and writing how successful it has been.
The feedback log is for students to write a comment at the end of the lesson. The comment could be a SWAN comment or a simple reminder of what ideas/advice the teacher has given them. This is also for teachers to record comments as the project progresses.

Year 7 Antoni Gaudi - Architecture Project

This is a great project for students to work through the PowerPoint and complete the tasks on the worksheets. Students explore Antoni Gaudi's work.

Use the PowerPoint to deliver your lesson and print off the sheet for students to draw on. The sheets can be printed back to back. Students have enjoyed this topic in the past. The drawings can lead to a final outcome which is three dimensional.

Careers CEIAG Calendar/Grid for Website Linked to Gatsby

This is an approved template of a Yearly Grid that details everything that our school ran throughout the year. Each activity is linked to the Gatsby Benchmarks which helps fuel weaknesses. It is also a good tool to use with subject leads as it is easy to fill in and monitor each year.

This is a great cover lesson for any class. It can be used as an extension to a project or as a filler lesson. I use it as a Year 6 Open Evening task with Year 7's to complete. Year 6's enjoy attempting it too.

Year 9 Op Art - Bridget Riley and Victor Vaserely Research sheet

(2)
This project is designed to suit the AQA assessment objectives. It looks into artist research of Bridget Riley and Victor Vaserely.

The first task is a warm up activity for Op Art. It gets the students into the project and working in the style of general Op Artists. Reminding the students to three tone shade is a good idea to help with the illusion.

The second task is a creative artist research page designed to push their skills when presenting work. Higher ability students could use it as guidance and present their work in a more independent way.

A wide variety of materials could be used to complete this unit. It is designed to last approximately 6 weeks.

Year 8/9 - Portrait Artists Project - Change your Stlye/Before the Selfie

These task sheets are great for students to explore how a wide variety of artists created portraits. The artists explored are:
Fernando Botero, Julian Opie, Chuck Close, Seth McFarlane, Andy Warhol and Jon Burgerman.

Students work in the style of the artist to create their own small portraits of friends in the group.

I completed this unit of work by allowing the students to pick which artist they wanted to do and in what order. They tried to get one completed a week but sometimes it took longer. They then used all of the different styles to help fuel a portrait of their own. Some combined ideas, others simply used one technique they liked the most.

Year 8 - How to draw a portrait - Half Term Project

This project is great because I find that students struggle to draw portraits because they guess. This unit breaks up the face into the separate facial features. The students learn how to draw an eye, mouth then a nose. They then put all of their skills into practice to try and draw a full face.
The introductory task is to shade and practice their curved shading.

This project should take approximately 6 weeks.

This booklet is designed for students to work independently in the doodle style of Jon Burgerman. It is perfect for those needing to explore their creativity and become more imaginative. It would make a great homework booklet.

The Brothers Grimm Art project - Literacy and Art

(0)
This project is designed to include research into the historical background of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Students will then look at current news articles to help modernise the fairy tale of choice.
The project includes artist analysis and annotation in line with the GCSE Art AQA specification to ensure that lower years start to understand how to annotate their work. It also includes illustrating their modernised fairy tale.
Students have thoroughly enjoyed the project and really engage with it. Those that enjoy writing can write their own fairy tale, others can simply bullet point or mind map their ideas as it is an art project after all.
This can easily be adapted into an English lesson with less focus on the drawing - but you have the drawing support to make sure that the students produce quality illustrations.

EAL Learning the Alphabet with Art Techniques

This resource is great for EAL students who are brand new to the English language and our alphabet. It was designed for students with a completely different alphabet and who read from right to left. However, it will be just as useful for any student struggling to get to grips with the English language.

The project booklet introduces the alphabet with the intention of drawing it in bubble writing then gently eases them into Graffiti. It introduces a few mark making words with regard to pattern. Students can easily follow the picture instructions.

I have uploaded the workable and PDF document so you can amend it to suit your needs.

This development plan has been approved by OFSTED with great results. They were very pleased. It is linked to the Gatsby Benchmarks so works very well when you are using the Compass Tracker to review your programme.

It can be easily linked to the Whole School Improvement Plan too.

This is a very handy resource. It includes a breakdown WILF for each of the boundaries and each of the objectives. It includes a plan of action and assessment marking sheets for the students.

It is supportive for teachers and students. Very useful. You can amend the theme in the workable document to the theme you have chosen as the WILF is generic.

Praise Portfolio

This is a great alternative to a report for students. Students set themselves targets and review their behaviour and/or progress at the end of the day. It works incredibly well and has been used effectively with my students. I have used it with Year 9 and they respond very well as it gives a perfect opportunity to really praise behaviour and/or progress that isn't always seen lesson to lesson.

This is a hand out I created for students to build a basic puppet for the Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The students can simply follow the step-by-step instructions. Of course, they can adapt their ideas as they go along but this is a good start and makes them work independently.

I also have the resources to build a Red Riding Hood puppet, The Three Blind Mice and also a Wolf with a moving mouth. Please feel free to browse through them.

This is a great project for cross curricular links with Drama and Music as well as a great project for possible primary school use.
