KS2 Painted Elephants Art Lesson

(10)
I did this with my Year 3 class and their elephants turned out beautiful. We began by reading the story "A Pair of Twins" which is a gorgeously illustrated picture book about a little girl who wants to ride her elephant in the Dussehra Festival in Mysore, India (which is considered a man's job). It is such a lovely book and even I learned lots of new words (howdah, mahout). The children really enjoyed this and I like that it links into literacy, history and geography. To bring even more authenticity to it we mixed Indian spices into the paint (cumin, turmeric, paprika, garam masala). Included: Lesson plan Elephant tracers Powerpoint x2 Photographs of finished art/display

I made and used this with a Year 5 class who were really excited about it. One of my groups was supposed to be in an intervention but because they saw what we were going to do and asked if they could do it too, they were able to complete it as a group with an adult. It ended up being spread over 2 lessons, as it did take quite a while to finish. Overall, the students enjoyed it but did find it quite tricky; especially the coupons. This would be a nice activity to try with Year 6. We did this on A3 paper and then shrunk it down to A4 to fit in their books. The detailed lesson plan with curriculum links is included.

I always start a maths lesson with a quick maths warm-up and I’ve gotten tired of using the same ones over and over. This is a list of warm-ups I’ve compiled to use with my reception / kindergarten class but many could be adapted to suit a range of ages. My kids and myself are loving some these new warm-ups!! Please comment below if you have any I can add to my growing repertoire of fun maths warm-ups! EYFS Foundation Stage

KS2 Differentiated Titanic Timelines

(3)
I did these Titanic timelines on A3 paper with my Year 3's and they looked fabulous. We used the A3 versions for a display and then shrunk them to put them in books. I got the Titanic timeline events here: http://activities.tpet.co.uk/?topic=Titanic#/Topic/titanic Then I chose 8 events I thought were important and created an A3 simple version of events for them to use and put one on each table (photo included). I kept the extra cards as some students managed to fit up to 10 events on their timeline. I gave each table lots of shapes that they could use if they wanted (some preferred to draw their shapes). And I also put blank clock faces on each table and challenged them to use some of these as well. The children really enjoyed making these and they looked great in the end. It ended up taking two lessons to complete (about 2 hours). Included are: Lesson Plan Powerpoint Timeline Cards Example Timeline for chn. to use Iceberg and Ship shapes Blank Clock Faces Example of finished work

KS2 Writing a Newspaper Article

(8)
Included are 2 detailed lesson plans with curriculum links and 3 newspaper templates (2 differentiated layouts to be done by hand; their rough drafts, 1 to be done on a computer; their good copy). We started this unit by looking at Pokemon newspaper articles and talking about point of view and the features of newspaper articles. That lesson can be found on my author dashboard. This was day 1 of designing their own newspaper articles. There are 2 layout formats (1 is more scaffolded and 1 leaves more freedom) which they filled in by hand. On Day 2 we worked on using an online template and typing up their articles, inserting photos, using the online thesaurus, ect,.

KS2 Literacy: Book Tasting

(5)
LO: Get excited about books! I found this awesome idea on Pinterest for a "book tasting." Basically, each table in the room has a different genre of books on it, set up like a restaurant with a book on each plate. The children have a certain amount of time to look at the cover, read the blurb, read a few pages and fill-in their menu card before moving to the next table. There are a few books in the middle of the table so that if they sit down at a plate and they really don't like the look of the book, they can trade it for one in the middle. I also brought around tiny "tasting" snacks at certain times throughout the event. I designed a really simple double-sided menu that is FREE! I used this in a Year 5 class but this could be adapted for any grade in school. The class loved this afternoon :). Included: book tasting menu, lesson plan.

Pack a Suitcase for Paddington EYFS reception / kindergarten

(5)
Inspired by a similar activity on twinkl I decided to tailor this suitcase packing activity to our London / Paddington Bear topic and add-in a written component. The plan and resources are detailed as this was created for an observed lesson. This was a Knowledge & Understanding slash literacy activity. Really excited to do this lesson! Included are: Lesson plan with Welsh curriculum links. Differentiated 3 ways. Items to cut out for Paddingtons suitcase. 2 suitcase clipart images to choose from. LA list-style writing prompt. MA/HA sentence writing prompt. For my outdoor provision I had bread, marmalade and butter knives so the ch. could practice fine-motor and maths skills (halves, quarters). I also had a vintage trunk and assorted clothes/items in the role play area, with a globe and laminated cards about the weather in different countries so they could pack a suitcase for Paddington if he were to go somewhere else. You can find the weather cards here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/weather-in-different-countries-cards-to-laminate-11917775

Differentiated KS2 Harry Potter Capacity Lesson with Dumbledore Video

(2)
The original resource and idea came from the following tes member so please check that our first! This is meant to be an addition to that lesson: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/capacity-magic-potions-empty-measuring-jug-6189506 I have used the same potions and ingredient names as the original resource (I changed some of the measurements slightly to suit my Year 3 class) and added on some other elements. The potion labels from the original resource wouldn't print on my computer properly so I've made a version of the labels that is as close as I could get them to the original. What I have made myself are letters from Hogwarts which can be aged with teabags and tied with string **Tailor them to your school/class. 5 differentiated maths riddles which can also be teabag dyed and tied with string which I had the secretary drop-off during the lesson saying an owl had just dropped them outside the office. **Again edit them to suit your class I also made a video using the photospeak app (a great idea from a colleague of mine) so that it seems like Dumbledore is talking to the class (I've tried to cut-out where he says "Miss Wilson" so that it can be used more generally and have uploaded the more general video to Youtube). It does skip where I've cut the video so you may want to make your own but if short for time this version should do. If your class is not Year 3 simply forward past the "greeting Year 3" bit to where it says "I have heard that you are a very bright bunch of witches and wizards and I need your help." Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFyn8aIG8nQ&feature=youtu.be You can also download the video from this post. I also made top secret folders to put the potions inside (top secret clipart included) and used fishing wire to hang Hogwarts letters from the ceiling (Hogwarts letters clipart included). And printed a Platform 9 3/4 sign on A3 paper and laminated for our door (included). Liquid ink and feathers found at HobbyCraft. Please check out my Harry Potter Grammar Mystery here as the two lessons would tie-in together nicely: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/ks2-differentiated-harry-potter-grammar-mystery-11732472

ww2 PE lesson

(1)
This hour-long PE session turned into nearly 2 hours because we were all having so much fun. Basic marching drills, fitness/warm-up and team-building army-style games. I was really lucky that my significant other is in the army and actually came in to co-teach this lesson. This also meant we had a ton of army kit at home which we used in our final (my favourite) game. Because of this some of the resources might be a little bit difficult to find but often some of the children have parents who are in the army or you could try a surplus store.

KS2 Practical Perimeter

(0)
I did this with my year 3 class. They used rulers to measure things in the classroom and to find out the perimeter. I also had a "challenge box" set up for student's who wanted a bit of a riddle to solve (extension). I put a roll of string and a meter stick in a box with a question that said: How could I measure the perimeter of something using string? The children really had to think about this one - most started by measuring the string but after a bit of trial and error realized what they had to do and were able to measure an object using the string. The only change I would make is next time I would tell students they must have a certain number of questions completed correctly (checked by me) before going onto the challenge. We had several chocolate bars laying around from our class topic of chocolate but the top 3 boxes could easily be edited to measure something else.

Scattergories KS1/KS2 Grammar Game

(2)
I had so much fun playing Scattergories with friends that I just had to find a way to adapt it for the classroom. There are 2 different playing sheets (different questions) and each has a regular version or a version with hints on it (1.a, 2.a). Give each student a playing sheet with numbers to 11. Pick someone in the class to choose a letter (for example, b) all the students must then answer each question using a word beginning with that letter. For example, a synonym for mad = barking, A word ending in 'ies' = babies etc,. At the end of 2 minutes (use a timer with sound preferably) they must put down their pencils as you go through their answers as a class. They get 1 point for each correct answer. If you want to make it a bit more challenging have them partner up with the person beside them and they cannot choose the same word so if both pupils wrote 'baboon' as 'an animal' then neither gets the point. Most but not all of the questions are grammar or literacy related. I played this with a Year 2 class who loved it but this could be used with all age groups and edited to suit many topics (for example, you could create a science version ; famous scientist, element, unit of measurement etc,.) as well as edited to be easier/harder/to revise something previously covered. A great warm-up or treat at the end of a lesson. I also really like silly sentences as a finishing-up game which can be found here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/adjective-noun-verb-and-adverb-game-silly-sent-6267020

Practical Weighing KS2

(1)
I did this over 2 days with my Year 3 class. On the second day I brought in some items from home for them to weigh to hold their interest (cd's, fruit, candle, mug, ect,.) The children were so excited to finally find out what was inside the mystery bag as it had been sitting on the shelf all week and it was definitely a great incentive to improve their estimates as the person with the closest guess of it's weight would win whatever was inside (it was a pack of Starburst). Included: 2 detailed lesson plans with curriculum links and 2 worksheets I made to record their practical work in. *As I realized the scales we were using didn't have a decimal place instead of covering rounding we worked on finding the difference and subtracting across zero's during the input for day 2.

KS2 Science Buoyancy Lesson

(3)
I had so much fun with my year 3's doing this practical task and even managed to learn some things myself in the process! The best part was how curious they were and how they extended themselves and even continued on with different experiments after they went home. Included are my lesson plan and observation sheet to record their findings on. I used 5 tubs of water and brought in all sorts of different materials to test whether they floated or sank. We talked about buoyancy, displacement and reliability. They loved the accompanying Bill Nye the Science Guy video and we even had time at the end to perform an experiment as a class to make an egg float in salted water (worked maths in here as we measured in ml's starting with the lowest guess and building up). One of the students asked whether dish soap might change the density of the water like the salt did so we grabbed some fairy liquid from the staff room and tried out his theory. I loved this lesson because it can be very open-ended and you can take it in the direction of your inquiring students rather than strictly sticking to a rigid LO. The only downside is it does take a while to get everything set up (there went my lunch hour) but it was worth it.

KS2 Differentiated Harry Potter Grammar Mystery

(2)
I’ve adapted the mystery I did based on Michael Morpurgo’s “Homecoming” so that the first clue spells out: “The wizard Dumbledore” (instead of Bennie the Thug), the second spells out: lemon sherbets and the third: desk drawer. Before class make sure to hide some lemon sherbets in your desk drawer. Leave a Harry Potter book open on a desk and footprints or something along those lines trailing from it or around the room. You could have more than one book open. Tell the children that you’ve received a mysterious package of “top secret” folders and a note that says someone has left a treat in the room for the class if they can solve who left it, what it is and where it is hidden. Hand out envelopes with “top secret” on the cover and the clues inside. This lesson would pair fantastically with my Harry Potter themed potions-mixing maths lesson, either as a “test” before Dumbledore asks them to measure out potions or as a reward for making the potions for him. There are 4 differentiated clue sets including one with pictures for SEN (which took aaaages!). Would make a good interview lesson. For a lesson plan based on the original lesson and any extra resources (Other Adult Planner, definitions to hand-out to students who need it, ect,.) check out the original grammar mystery here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/ks2-differentiated-grammar-mystery-nouns-verbs-adjectives-homecoming-michael-morpurgo-11668989
