This lesson encourages the students to examine the key characters & themes in Homer’s Odyssey Book XXIII (Odysseus and Penelope). First students reflect on the key events of the Book by competing against each other to win a prize. Students then examine the theme of reunion by focusing on the characters of Odysseus and Penelope. Finally students examine the character of Odysseus in Book XXIII and question whether or not he is more of a hero by the end of Book XXIII than he was when he landed in Ithaca in Book XIII.
