Here is a complete scheme of work that has been tried and tested in the classroom setting over the past year. The feedback from students and staff has been overwhelmingly positive. Not only does this scheme of work get your students composing, performing and listening to Chinese music, but it also links with the culture of China through a retelling of The Butterfly Lovers story.

The resources in this scheme of work are:

  • fully editable Google Slides & PowerPoint slideshow containing nine lessons
  • all three stands of listening, performing and composition are covered
  • listening concepts are embedded through various listening activities
  • students learn to perform Dragon Dance using tuned percussion and percussion instruments
  • students compose their own pentatonic composition using the techniques that are embedded within Dragon Dance. Video tutorials are included to aid the teacher with this part of the unit.
  • a PDF contains a link to my shared Google Drive folder with which you can make copies of these resources.
  • an end of unit assessment which reviews all of the material in this scheme of work.
