Using an eye piece graticule and stage micrometer

(0)
A student workbook with A Level examination questions along with an accompanying teacher PowerPoint which explains how to solve the questions. The resource goes through several calculations and question types involving a stage micrometer and eyepiece graticule. The PowerPoint and student workbook both have a step by step example of how to calibrate an eyepiece graticule and then how to use the same eyepiece graticule to measure cells and cellular components. The size of cells and organelles are measured using the micrometre (μm) scale. One question also asks student’s to calculate magnification (M) when both the size of the image (I), and the actual size of the specimen (A), is known. A starter activity where students label the parts of a light microscope is also included in both the PowerPoint and student workbook The A Level OCR examination questions give students practice in calibrating an eyepiece graticule and use images from microscopes. The student booklet contains 6 questions and a range of different question types (calculation, written response and multi-choice) where students use their calculations of the eyepiece graticule to calculate the actual size of some real example images. Useful for exam practice and to build understanding of a tricky topic. Answers included in the animated PowerPoint so that the teacher can explain each step in the calculation. There is also a teacher version of the student workbook with a full mark scheme and examiner’s feedback.

A Level Biology Revision Game

(0)
An A Level Biology Revision Board game where students need to answer biology questions in order to make progress. A really fun way to revise! The aim of the game is to be the first player to reach the end by moving across the board left to right. The resource contains an A3 printable board and over 300 question cards based on the OCR Specification A for A Level Biology. There are also over 70 ‘Give me Five’ question cards. Players shake a dice and advance to the appropriate position on the board. If a player lands on a question they must answer a question from the cards provided – if they get it correct they advance 3 squares, if they get it wrong they go back 3 squares. There are also ‘Give me Five’ questions - if a player lands on one of these the opponent reads out a question from a ‘Give me Five’ card and starts the stopwatch. If the player can name all of the five things on the card within 30 seconds they advance forward 5 spaces; if they cannot name all five they go back 5 spaces. Print out the A3 boards and laminate if possible. Print the questions on green paper or card (I use light green for yr12 and dark green for yr13 – so that you can play the game with year 12 students by removing the dark green questions before play). You’ll also need a dice, some coloured counters and a stopwatch. A typical game last 30-45 minutes.

Blockbusters Quiz

Similar to the classic TV show and excellent as a team-based retrieval practice activity. This game is best played using the glossary at the back of the text book and is ideal for revision at the end of a course or topic. When the students request a letter the teacher (or another student) randomly selects a word from the glossary which begins with that letter. The teacher then reads out the glossary definition for that word and the students guess it. The team that wins the letter can then request the next letter and so on… The PowerPoint has hexagons with ‘triggered animation’ - click on a hexagonal shape containing a letter once and it will change to white, click on it twice and it changes to blue. The ‘score’ hexagons contain editable text boxes. When one team wins a round click on the ‘0’, delete it and type in ‘1’. The PowerPoint is macro free and comes with a Word Document instructions sheet.
