Supporting children that have controlling behaviours
Outline:
This resource pack has been created to explore a child’s fears, worries and anxieties. It is an excellent tool in getting to know the ‘why’ behind a child’s behaviour.
Simply, print off the mats and visual scenarios. Cut these scenarios out and place them in front of the mats. Encourage the child to select each of the cards and place them onto the mat they feel is the most appropriate. Once completed, work with the child in developing a problem solving style approach to resolving any fears they may have.
Objectives:
To identify and understand a child’s fears, worries and anxieties
To empower the child to understand things they can and can not control
To support children that control their external environment due to fear
To empower the child to problem solve irrational fears
Note:
The great thing about these mats – is that as you begin to identify the child’s concerns – you can create your own images through post-it notes. Expanding and exploring additional scenarios.

It breaks down the model of CBT - by being the facilitator in the process of understanding why a child’s angry part felt so unsafe. Thereafter, working on a solution focused approach of support. It offers everything you need to understand the ‘why’ behind the behaviour.
