A very simple, low-prep listening task for French - once pupils are quite familiar with the vocab on prepositions, rooms in the house and items of furniture, you can do this fun sorting task. You can either prepare a list of vocab in advance or just do it off the cuff as I do - read out a short list of vocab items that fit into one of the categories, and pupils write the number in the correct column. eg. if you say ‘Numero 1, la buanderie’ pupils write ‘1’ under ‘places in the house’ etc. you could then do a recall task after marking it where pupils have to make a list of the words in French that were mentioned in each category!

A short worksheet with a reading and listening exercise to practise distinguishing between the present and perfect - good to do once students have just learned the perfect tense, to go back to the present and consolidate the differences between them

A quick activity to practise recognising the gender of different nouns using the ending of the word. The table summarises some of the main rules and has a selection of food items at the bottom - pupils look at each word and sort it into the correct column.

Consolidation work to practise vocab on descriptions of people - simply read each sentence slowly and pupils have to translate into English on blank sheet or mini whiteboards, can be done in pairs as quiz. Alternatively, you could read the sentences and pupils write them in Spanish, dictation-style to practise recognising vocab and spelling correctly. Answers included.

This is a template for a multiple-choice lesson activity (could be used as a starter or plenary, or a short recap exercise). I have included examples of how I have used it in the past with Spanish, in a gap-fill style to consolidate vocab previously learned. You could keep the gap-fill aspect or get rid of it and just put questions.

A short speaking activity to practise the vocab for saying which school subjects you like/dislike and why. Students have to unjumble the sentences orally in pairs. Uses a variety of different opinion phrases and adjectives.
