Ideal starter mental maths tests or quizzes. NO PREP! This pack contains 15 Mental Arithmetic PowerPoint Speed Tests, originally designed for Upper Key Stage 2 (KS2) - Y5 and Y6 (Primary 6 and 7 and other equivalents) but might also suit some early KS3 classes for revision and consolidation. They could be used as part of SATs preparation too. UPDATE: Now included in PDF versions as well as the original PowerPoints. Money calculations are in UK Pounds, but dollar versions of all resources are also included.
Students enjoy trying to beat their previous best score. These informal tests are split across 3 files and are designed to be shown on the whiteboard, with children recording answers in jotters or on paper. In each quiz there’s one question to a slide so children can focus on it for a few seconds before the next one comes up. The question slides are plain and uncluttered to minimise distractions. You can run the PowerPoint presentation on a timer if you wish - alternatively click it on yourself, perhaps allowing a little longer for more challenging questions. Each test features 20 calculations involving a variety of mathematical skills and knowledge. Alternatively, use the PDF versions.
At the end of each test, there follows the same 20 slides repeated, with the answer added clearly. Students can mark their own or a partner’s work to cut down on your workload. If short of time, you can whizz through the answers but each answer appearing with its question like this allows for important discussions about strategies.
Concepts include: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Times Tables, Doubling and Halving, Negative Numbers, Multiplying and Dividing by 10 and 100, Place Value, Decimals, Percentages, Fractions, Money, Measure (including Area and Perimeter, Time, Length), Angles.
The PowerPoint files are editable should you wish to amend any wording or change the odd question to better suit your class.
Differentiation: I’ve called this Set A rather than used any other identifier to help facilitate the use of my Set B (originally designed for Lower Key Stage 2) with lower ability children within the same class without children being aware of the age level of the questions. This giant crossword is designed to be completed in groups and features 100 quiz-style clues on all things Scottish. It could be used for Burns Night on 25th January, other Scottish celebrations such as Saint Andrew's Day, end of term fun, start of term fun, as part of a Scotland topic or simply to get students discussing Scottish history, politics, geography, sport, wildlife, popular culture, traditions and more. It suits Third and Fourth Level pupils at Secondary (Key Stage 3 and KS4 and other equivalents) and would also work well at Second Level in Primary - P6 and P7 (Year 5 and 6 and other equivalents). There is a support sheet of answers in alphabetical order, which could be provided for younger or less able pupils in order to make completion of the puzzle significantly easier but still a fun challenge. You might want to give this support sheet out once students have done as much as they can do without help.
Due to the wide range of facts in the puzzle, it works best when students can pool their knowledge in a group. They could research any clues they are unable to work out for themselves. The crossword works especially well if you print it in A3 but it works fine in A4 too. A solution grid is also provided, which could be printed or displayed on the whiteboard at the end.
Includes: Robert Burns, Scottish Wars of Independence, Scottish Parliament, rivers, cities, inventors, art, literature, music, clothing, food, sports stars, mountains, islands, actors, Kings and Queens and more.
Also for Burns Night to suit Second and Third Level (upper KS2 and early KS3), I have a reading comprehension and other literacy activities on Robert Burns and Burns Suppers: Robert Burns Reading Comprehension and Activities
I hope you and your pupils have lots of fun using this. If you can spare a moment I would be grateful for a review. Many thanks.

KS2 Finding Fractions of Quantities / Amounts Numeracy scavenger hunt or relay activity: an active printable mental maths team game, with differentiation, ideal as a whole class starter or plenary at Year 5 / Year 6 and early KS3, especially when focusing on fractions of a quantity / amount. It can be played multiple times in a lesson or across several lessons as groups can use different card sets each time. Teams complete a treasure hunt-type chain of fractions calculations, followed by a ‘Find the Target Number’ mental maths challenge, using a mixture of the four operations. There are 54 double-sided cards, forming sets of 6 cards for 9 teams. A key feature is the chance to involve lower ability students in a fun whole class activity to give them a boost of confidence without it being obvious their calculations are less challenging (3 of the sets are at an easier level). Full instructions included, along with solutions.

KS2 Maths Treasure Hunt BUNDLE
Students collaborate on a treasure hunt type maths trail and when they’ve collected all 5 answers, they are given a target, which they must make using 3 given numbers. You can print and laminate the cards in batches of 3 sets, so if you don’t require them all, you needn’t print them. The cards should be printed double-sided (they’ve been laid out to facilitate this). I print by selecting the ‘2-Sided Short Edge (Top)’ option. However, if you can only print one-sided, print all the even-numbered pages, replace the paper, and print the odd-numbered pages on the back.
Give each team their ‘Start’ card. Spread out all other cards, answer side up. Each team sends one person to collect the correct answer card, on the other side of which will be their next question and a letter to confirm which team it belongs to. On the other side of the final answer card will be a target number, which teams must make, using the numbers printed in boxes in the bottom right corner of 3 of their cards. Use all 3 numbers and only once each, using any of the 4 operations. The first to make their target number wins! One possible answer for each of the target challenges is printed on the solution cards.

BOARD GAME: In turn, players roll dice and move the appropriate number of spaces. If they can say aloud in French the correct weather on the space they land on, they stay there etc. CHALLENGE VERSION: Students say the weather in the location they land on. (Il y a du soleil à Paris / Il y a du brouillard au Canada etc.)

Rounding activities (7 fun puzzles worksheets) for Upper Key Stage 2 Year 5 and 6 (Y5 / Y6). Rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, whole number, 1 decimal place, 2 decimal places and rounding to the nearest pound. These PDF format Maths / Numeracy activities are ideal for early finishers, starters / warm ups, and homework too. Use for revision and consolidation, as part of a place value unit, or for meaningful fun at other times. An engaging alternative to standard worksheets, these Hidden Word puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. All solutions provided. If you wish, laminate for repeated use and write on them with whiteboard pens. In Scotland, it's ideal for Second Level Maths, Primary 6 and 7.
Contains 7 and their solutions: rounding 2-digit numbers to the nearest ten, 3-digit numbers to the nearest hundred, 4-digit numbers to the nearest thousand and various size decimal numbers to the nearest whole number, 1 decimal place and 2 decimal places. Puzzle 7 comes in two versions - rounding to the nearest pound / rounding to the nearest dollar.
These puzzles are similar to codebreaker puzzles, with a maths-related word to be revealed after the rounding work. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a number to be rounded and a letter. Once students have rounded all the numbers, they cross out any boxes containing numbers that round to certain specified target numbers (whether it is to the nearest 10, 1 decimal place etc). Then they put together the letters from the remaining boxes to reveal a maths word. If the word is more simple, the letters are in random order for students to reassemble. If it is a trickier word (such as a famous mathematician), the letters are already placed in the correct order in the grid. There is a further challenge question / task at the bottom of the page linked to the hidden word.
The range of puzzles in this resource is ideal for differentiation and revision and / or to cater for a range of groups and classes.

These resources will help you plan multiple lessons. Additional US format date versions are also now included.

(What is the date?), which depends on whether you are including the day:
C'est samedi cinq avril
C'est le cinq avril
Another teaching point reinforced with this activity is the fact that days and months do not start with capital letters in French.

Similar to codebreaker puzzles, a maths-related word is revealed after completing calculations. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a calculation and a letter. Students circle any boxes containing errors. Then they assemble letters from the circled boxes to reveal the hidden maths word. (In the rounding puzzle students find the numbers that don’t round to specified target numbers and in some of the fractions puzzles, students must find non-equivalent fractions etc). In many puzzles there is an extension question / challenge linked to the hidden word, which on some may require a little research if time.
Students often forget or avoid checking their work for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves.
Thank you for your interest in my resources. I do hope your students enjoy using these puzzles. Please do consider giving a review on TES if you get a spare moment. I would be so grateful.

A PowerPoint lesson presentation (also in PDF format) and printable flash cards for a Les Émotions et Les Sentiments / Feelings in French unit, with answer keys and vocabulary support pages (38 pages in total). Includes negative and positive emotions and conditions such as being cold, hot, hungry and thirsty. Students are taught to express in French how themselves and others are feeling and how to give reasons for emotions and feelings.

Equivalents such as Grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 Core French in Canada
May suit others, depending on experience
Please check the preview.
You can buy this with related worksheets, puzzles and games in this French Emotions and Feelings BUNDLE.
Within the Zip file is the original Powerpoint version, plus an additional PDF version and a PDF file of flash cards for 30 emotions and feelings.

Many slides in the PowerPoint version feature answers that appear when you click, for students to respond. An additional PDF version is included (without interactivity, but you can use it if you don’t have PowerPoint). The Hexagons, Hangman and Reveal the Picture games are not compatible with PDF, so are omitted from that version.

DECIMAL NUMBERS FOUR IN A ROW:
• Two sets of 54 decimal number cards featuring numbers from 0.001 to 2.01 (1 set includes numbers up to 2 decimal places, the other up to 3 decimal places)
• Two A3 Four in a Row boards. The 1 star version was originally designed to go with the cards to 2 decimal places, while the more challenging 2 star version was designed for the cards to 3 decimal places. However, both sets of cards would work with either board. It works especially well in A3, however, you could scale down the board to A4 and use the smaller card set supplied.
You could have pairs take on other pairs. Each team of two starts with a set of cards (print each set on different coloured card if you don’t have coloured printing that would allow you to print the different coloured cards supplied, then laminate to use again and again). It works well if each team shuffles their cards, puts them in a pile and takes one from the top at a time, which they then put down on the board if there’s a suitable empty box. They aim to get four of their cards in a row. Each box has a stipulation about the numbers that can be placed on it (no tenths, < 1.5, > 0.31, < 0.56, five hundredths etc). To save printing you could split a set between 2 or 3 boards as a single team won’t require all 54 cards.
The cards can also be used separately from the game boards for ordering activities.

Fun Upper Primary Maths games and activities for Key Stage 2 (KS2) Year 5 and 6 - or Primary 6 and 7 in Scotland. Factors and Multiples starters, warm ups, early finishers tasks, revision etc. A differentiated set of over 70 cards to be used for self-checking factors work or for fun games, plus 6 game boards and 36 cards for multiples bingo / lotto.
FACTORS:
Lower ability file features numbers up to 100. Higher ability file includes many more challenging numbers, up to 16,000. The cards are designed to be printed double-sided with the answers (all factors of the number) on the back. Once you have printed the front side, pop your paper or card back in the printer and print the answers.
This works especially well as an early finisher activity. Pupil Instruction Card is included for ‘Factors Frenzy’ game, where children compete to find as many factors of a number as they can. It could get quite competitive!
MULTIPLES:
6 bingo boards, each featuring 6 numbers between 2 and 12. Print and laminate these as well as the 36 number cards (which each feature four numbers). When picking up a card, players must decide if the four numbers on their card are ALL multiples of a single number on their board. If so, they can place it over that number. If not, they put it back. There’s tactical thinking in this game as some children will realise that all multiples of i.e. 12 are also multiples of 6, 4, 3, 2 - so they will need to prioritise covering the numbers for which there are fewer cards. A couple of cards will not be able to be placed on anyone’s board as there is no common multiple. As usual, the first to cover all numbers is the winner. A Pupil Instruction Card is included for this game too. It comes in both colour and black and white.
These are available for a saving in a bundle (see below).
I hope your pupils enjoy using them and that they save you time. You might be interested in some of my other Maths resources, including these KS2 Maths Puzzles, my fastest-selling resource of all:
