A spooky graveyard vocabulary mat in ppt which can be shown to the whole class or printed out to use individually. It is also provided in Smartboard format. This was initially designed to go with short film clip - 'Teachers TV: Writing a Ghost Story: Graveyard', which is a great clip for helping to create an eerie atmosphere and to teach children how to build up the tension in their stories. Children learn a language by hearing first, so there are lots of games included where they have to listen to instructions and then act on them. There is a whole sheet of these which can be used outside for PE or in the hall or some around a table in the classroom. Plans for 4 lessons with resources. Using the presentation, (in either ppt or Smart notebook format) children establish what a non-chronological report is, it’s purpose and where they might find one. They then read an example of one as a class - about the planet Mars. After that, they plan and write their own report about a fictional planet e.g. Planet Zog. In further lessons, they read another report example - Pie Corbett’s about a Frost Unicorn, which you can download free from Teachwire. Again, they use their check-lists to find the main features. Next they draw a newly discovered alien from Planet Zog and plan a NC report about it on their ‘spidergram’ planning sheets. Finally, they write their own reports. All fully editable. Worksheets presented on a ppt with 5 pages, each showing a different rule for the past tense. Children use the given sport themed verbs to make up their own sentences in the past tense, using the picture prompts to help them. Although designed to be used as worksheets it could be shown to the whole class to explain what to do and as an oral exercise. It can be photocopied as individual worksheets or printed and laminated for use with small groups or for working independently. It is all completely editable. The aim is to help children to get familiar with different past tense verb endings by making up their own sentences, therefore using them more in their own work. An introductory ppt explains what paragraphs are. A further ppt explains how we use them in fiction / story writing. There are several activities including deciding why a new paragraph is needed. Children then have to sort a description of a ghostly house into two paragraphs. They use this as a story opening and continue the story, starting a new paragraph when appropriate. Pictures and vocabulary to use as stimuli for descriptive writing. First children could be asked to describe the scenes orally using as many of the words as they can. The pictures can also be printed out for individual use. There is a worksheet to accompany this - the children choose one scene to describe. A second ppt shows a picture of a good and a bad character. Children are asked to look up the given vocabulary and find synonyms. This is also included as a worksheet. All fully editable. Children watch the PPT or Smart board presentation showing pictures of a day out at the beach. They talk about what they take with them, their picnic lunch, what they do at the beach and what they buy at the shop. They do this orally, or on whiteboards, using the picture prompts, thinking carefully about where the commas should go. They then write a paragraph describing the day out, using the given sentence openers. There is a check list to help them to remember to use commas correctly. Finally, they could go on to write a descriptive paragraph about another day out using commas in a similar way, such as a day at the zoo, or a visit to a big city. Fully editable. A jungle safari word mat to aid creative writing with pictures and useful vocabulary. Aim - to help stimulate children's imaginations so they can write more independently and to increase their vocabulary. The second one is to aid a piece of non-fiction writing. Children write about what objects they would take on a jungle safari, describing each and explaining why they would take it. Challenge them to use vocabulary from each box for each object. A ppt or Smartboard presentation to help children to sequence sentences. First they describe a spooky house with help from the pictures. Then what happens when they go to the spooky house? What do they see first? Who do the eyes belong to? New eyes appear. Who do they belong to? The children first tell the story orally, then they write down their own accounts. They check the spellings of animal names in the dictionary, learn to spell the days of the week and months of the year, learn body words and story characters etc. I found that they really enjoyed doing these e.g. when they had finished their work, and they were learning all the time!
