In this activity pupils will find out what jobs there were for ordinary people in the Kingdom of Benin by reading the job descriptions on the cards and matching them to the trade titles.
In this activity, pupils will consider what its surviving artwork tells us about Benin Kingdom. They will use the cards to match the vocabulary to the correct artefact. They could then use these artefacts as inspiration for their own art work.
This resource contains a template that pupils can use when they are planning their own instructional texts. Pupils can record each step of their instructions in pictures or words. There is also space on the plan to record a title, an equipment list, useful imperative verbs, prepositions and other helpful details.
This is a versatile resource that can be used for planning instructions for lots of different topics.
Performing Classic Poetry
Edgar Allan Poe - 2 week unit
A two-week literacy unit of work for 5th/6th Grade, containing lesson plans and pupil resources, looking at some of Poe's atmospheric poems with dramatic mood changes in them.
. In this unit pupils will:
- read and listen to classic poems by Edgar Allan Poe
- research the historical and literary context of the poems
- engage imaginatively with poetic language
- discover how Poe uses poetic devices to change the mood of a poem
- create their own mysterious Raven character
- hold a debate to find out what type of poetry 'The Raven' is
- write a recount of the frenzied events of 'The Raven'
- express the mood of a poem through performance
- prepare and give a performance to an audience
The poems include 'The Bells' and 'The Raven'.

Very popular! This is a great one-off literacy activity and a wonderful teamwork project to help your class work together to make a class poem. You could use this as a great way to start a new year, as pupils come together in unity to create a new class poem using the letters in the name of their class.
The pack contains a Powerpoint lesson, teacher instructions and pupil resources - everything you need for this fun poetry lesson, including warm up/getting to know you games and a fun teamwork project based on making and performing a class poem.
The activity allows pupils to work together to make a class poem that spells out the name of their new class. The session is based around Edward Lear’s ‘Alphabet Poem’ and the activities include suggestions for adapting the lesson for KS1 or KS2.
This resource is structured in the following way:
1. Fun warm up activities and games including name games, a classroom hunt activity, a paper-chain race and ‘Find Someone Who’ bingo.
2. A poetry time activity following the lesson Powerpoint to help the class to become familiar with Edward Lear’s ‘Alphabet Poem’. There are different options to adapt this for different age groups.
3. A group activity in which pupils create their own stanzas for the alphabet poem, using the letters that spell out your class name or their new teacher’s name.
4. A whole class performance of the new poem.

A five-lesson literacy unit of poetry planning for Years 1 and 2, based on performing Easter poetry and built around the KS1 English objectives.
In this unit, pupils will read a classic Easter poem about a fast white rabbit and they will consider how the sounds and language patterns come alive when the poem is read aloud, particularly reflecting on the use of verbs and similes. Children will work towards creating their version of the Easter poem and turning it into an effective performance, which could be used for an Easter assembly or celebration.

In this All About Me activity, pupils fill in two fun activity sheets about themselves. They seal their All About Me sheets in an envelope and decorate a time capsule label for the front. Be as creative as you like with the envelope decoration - glitter, stickers, pens or paints!
Then the teacher saves the All About Me time capsule envelopes and returns them at the end of the year to be opened. Children just love opening these and seeing how they have changed over the course of the year!

A two-week literacy unit of work for 4th/5th Grade, containing lesson plans and pupil resources, looking at some of Tennyson's vivid poetic imagery about sea monsters and war heroes. In this unit pupils will:
- read and listen to classic poems by Alfred Lord Tennyson
- research the historical and literary context of the poems
- engage imaginatively with poetic language
- create their own sea monster poem inspired by 'The Kraken'
- turn a narrative poem into a comic strip
- identify poetic devices in the poem and explain their effects
