This is a typed version of MS Word exercises located in Clait 2006 (ISBN 0132369370). We base our KS3 curriculum on these fantastic books but since the design are a little dated, it helps to spruce up the design. And also easier to manage as a digital resource.
This worksheet gives a number of images - different jobs - which the students should be familiar with. They must name each job and then look each word up in the dictionary and copy from the dictionary. They should be writing in full sentences. This practises their skills of researching a topic and looking for a word alphabetically.
This fun worksheet teaches learners how to utilise the shapes in MS Word to create designs. Students can use their initiative to create their own graphics.
(The instructions have been written for an old version of Office.)
This handy resource describes the complex paragraph settings in MS Word for young learners. There is a short exercise at the end of the worksheet to review the information.
A fun activity for students to experiment with a range of formatting tools. Learners should be advised to use their common sense to ensure text matches the formats applied.
A concise presentation for new learners communicating the classroom expectations and procedures. Can be adjusted for your individual preferences.
Especially useful for introducing a new environment such as the ICT Room.
The purpose of this exercise is to familiarise learners with the environment of the Office software suite. By exploring the ribbon and tabs in each software, learners understand how the program is set up and where to find particular commands. (I like to compare it to a house with multiple rooms, which each have many storage locations each for specific items.)
When giving this task I encourage learners to resize each software so only the ribbon is visible of each and so they are also practicing the skill of managing a range of windows.
Additionally teaching how to pin a program to the taskbar is also helpful at this stage. So lots of important skills being developed here!
This activity consolidates learners’ skills to save files appropriately. Understanding the difference between ‘save’ and ‘save as’ are essential here. The practical ‘real-life’ approach taken here helps students visualise the process.
This is an enjoyable task which I would give in the Year 7 classes when teaching Word formatting techniques. It also offers typing practice.
Can be used to stretch the higher ability learners.
The purpose of this task is to learn and consolidate the table tools in MS Word. By using a range of techniques including merge, split, add/delete columns etc it will allow learners to become familiar with the table structure and their versatility.
There are some tools on MS Word which are little explained. Hence this exercise explores some of these tools including thesaurus, word count and screenshot. Feel free to expand this task to include more skills.
