SPANISH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES #1
PRIMARY SPANISH KS3 SPANISH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES Sopas de letras are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 33 Spanish Christmas words, which I also use as a prompt to stimulate discussion about Spanish Christmas practices and customs, and we talk about what students know about other Christmas traditions around the world. The nouns feature masculine and feminine, singular and plural and both definite and indefinite articles, which is a great way of working on and consolidating those grammatical concepts too.
There are 5 Spanish to Spanish grids, where students are prompted with the Spanish words, and look for them in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test! There are also 5 English to Spanish grids, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the Spanish equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in Spanish, they also complete the Spanish word list on each page. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid.
There is an answer key for each word search, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys are absolutely essential for me, as they provide students with an additional opportunity to engage with language, help them develop more independence in their learning.
There’s a Spanish-English Christmas vocabulary reference sheet - you can either laminate this to share around small groups of students, or give one to each student to stick into their learning workbooks as a general reference resource. Students will have to look carefully at some of the words they’re looking for, as they may appear slightly differently - for example, they may have to find the gifts and work out what that is in Spanish - only the prompt the gift appears in the reference list.

Word searches are a simple and effective way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in German, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 30 German Christmas words, which will also help to develop students’ awareness of some German-speaking countries Christmas traditions and figures, such as Sankt Nikolaus and Knecht Ruprecht. The vocabulary is really useful for stimulating discussion about German Christmas practices and customs. Students also enjoy talking about other Christmas traditions they know or follow. The vocabulary list features the definite article, though some grids also have the indefinite article / plurals for additional challenge.
Grids 1-4 are German-German, where students are prompted with the German words, and look for them in German in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list to complete. Grids 5-8 are English-German, where the prompts are given in English, and students look for the German translation in the grid. They also write the German translation of the English word. Grids 9 and 10 prompt students with a specific Christmas image, and they look for the corresponding German word in the grid, also completing a German vocabulary list for additional consolidation.
There is an answer key for each word search, so that students can check their answers, or use for a little extra help if they need it. The word searches and answer keys are in portrait format, with arrows indicating in which direction the individual words are located.
There is an alphabetical German-English Christmas vocabulary list which students find really helpful. There are two formats: search grids and answer keys together, so that they can be printed out and copied double-sided, and search grids / answer keys as separate files.
The word searches are useful in a range of learning contexts - as starters, refreshers, finishers, fun-time fillers and for sub / cover lessons at any time during the Christmas / Holiday season.

Ideal multi-skill language learning activity for developing listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling skills for Italian class. Bingo games are really easy to differentiate, and there is a range of differentiated grid formats to choose from: 12-square grids; 30-square grids; picture only and blend of words & pictures, providing learners with a real opportunity to practice all four language skills.
This set of Christmas bingo games comprises the following:
= 40 picture-only bingo 12-square grids, 4 per page (10 pages) You can give students a random selection of pages, with students selecting the order of grids they play from. You can also cut out the grids, and place them in a small bowl or similar object on tables. Students then select grids randomly from the bowl. For additional challenge, students can play all four grids in a single game. Depending on the size of your class, you can have several winners per game. Colour and BW.
= 40 words & pictures bingo 12-square grids, 4 per page (10 pages) Colour & B&W.
= 10 picture-only 30-square grids (A4 portrait format) Distribute the grids among students, several grids per student, which they choose randomly for every game. There should be several winners per game, depending on the size of the group. Colour & BW.

= Calling card, featuring 32 Italian Christmas words. Print or photocopy double-sided to minimise prep. There are 8 check columns per page, so that you can really get the most from each card - call the words randomly, ticking them off as you go, so that you can check the winning grids. You can vary the use of the definite and indefinite article, singular or plural.
= Calling card, featuring the English translation of the Italian Christmas words. This is great for additional challenge - students hear the English word, and translate it quickly, looking for it in writing in Italian in the grid
These games are designed for players to cross off all the words or pictures on their grids in order to win the game - choose a Christmas-theme word or phrase as the winning word, and ensure that winners read out their completed grids in order to confirm the win: this also acts as additional language practice.

Christmas provides a great learning opportunity in Italian class. Activities featuring Italian Christmas vocabulary provide a dual learning platform, where students can learn about Christmas in Italy, at the same time as revisiting and revising language they have already engaged with. Using Italian Christmas images and vocabulary enables students to engage with traditions and customs in Italian-speaking countries, comparing and contrasting them to other Christmas practices they know or follow. It’s a really useful way of stimulating discussion about Christmas in Italy and other Italian-speaking countries. German Christmas Ich habe… Wer hat… ? is a whole-group lively and communicative language learning game. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompts of the German Christmas images, makes it perfect for practising, reinforcing and refreshing German Christmas vocabulary. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too.
The aim of the game is to arrange the cards in the relevant order. Students can either create a human chain, holding the cards themselves, or a card line, on the floor, a longish table or other flat surface. There are 32 German Christmas words with images, and it’s likely that students will have more than one card each per game, depending on the size of the class. The vocabulary and images provide a really useful stimulus for discussion about Christmas traditions and practices in German-speaking countries.
There are two games, each with a different challenge:
= Challenge 1: the nouns written out in full with the definite article, and the Q & A Ich habe… Wer hat…? Students walk around, calling out the question.
= Challenge 2: the nouns are in a different order, with only the definite article, and the Q & A ***Hast du…? Ja (Nein), ich habe…***. This challenge puts students’ vocabulary recall to the test, and students walk around, addressing other students individually.
Play either as a whole-group game, or as a team game - which team can complete the challenge first? You can either play the challenges consecutively, or as a team game, swapping the challenges so that each team has a chance to play both challenges.
