GCSE GERMAN CONJUGATION PRACTICE SAMPLER a great way of practising, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate all the various verb groups and tenses/moods in German. I use them in a range of learning contexts such as independent work either in class time or at home, holiday refresher work, or individual activities for cover lessons. Each workbook is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: German : English and English : German Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in German, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding German verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. Notes and Next Steps sheet, which encourages students to think about how their understanding of German conjugation works, what progress they have made, what their targets for improvement might realistically be, and what they might reasonably do in order to meet those targets. Students also note down any new verbs they discover, which enables them to build up a really sound verb vocabulary bank. We also use this to guide our whole-group discussions about conjugation and German grammar, and learning and progress in general - this is a really successful and popular activity. There is a Spanish to English grid, where learners are prompted with the Spanish word, and look for them in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test! Learners can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. Having a good bilingual dictionary to hand is also a good idea, as this provides a further focus on developing literacy in both Spanish and English, and facilitates learner independence. I give my students of all grades and learning phases a whole series of reference lists, that build up into a really comprehensive reference bank over the course of their German programme. They’re really popular with my students, as they know they can just go to their reference file or folder, and find what they need. They tell me that they feel far more confident about their German when they have a good grasp of core German vocabulary. They’re great for quick vocab quizzes too. There are two alphabetical lists - one German-English, and one English-German, as I’ve found that beginner German students prefer to have both as a reference resource. I’ve noted where a verb is separable, irregular or conjugated with sein. If my group is small, I provide students with a set of double-sided and laminated reference resources. My students all have a reference file or folder, again from the beginning of their learning, and part of helping them develop independence in, and responsibility for, their learning, is to give them opportunity to keep their learning resources in good order, and easily accessible. The verbs are all in the infinitive form - it’s an important step in learning is to ensure that students quickly develop a useful vocabulary bank, are able to recognize high-frequency German reflexive verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs in English - at that point we can move swiftly on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context. We also use our reference lists to help students audit their developing German verb vocabulary. The list is a great time-saver for teachers too - if you’re preparing resources focusing on high-frequency German reflexive verbs for your students, the list is a good starting point. There are two backgrounds to choose from - German flag, which I generally use for German grammar or German vocabulary display, and plain. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their German language skills in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. This set focuses on German dates, days, months and seasons, which is usually described as beginner German vocabulary. The questions however are aimed at advanced beginner German into intermediate German students, as working with more complex language as quickly as possible helps progress students’ learning and gives them in a more realistic experience of the language they are learning. Questions and answers address a range of grammatical concepts, such as articles, cases, word order and adjectival endings. Students may not at this stage have formally engaged with all the language and grammar included in the set, and this makes the activity equally about practicing and consolidating German language skills and actively learning new language and grammar. The questions are entirely in German, including translation questions from both German into English and English into German. It’s important to help students understand as soon as possible that translation does not mean simply exchanging word for word, and that languages work in different ways to express the same meaning. The key to successful translation is to convey the original meaning accurately. Some questions address important dates or figures in German history, such as Tag der Deutschen Einheit and Angela Merkel. The set comprises the following non-editable files: = 48 differentiated question cards, 6 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. The set features 25 high-frequency regular German verbs in the present tense. There are 6 worksheets, with three differentiated conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations, in two design formats: = Workbook Format: 10-page workbook, with cover page, verbs lists, six worksheets and Notes, Next Steps and New Verbs page, where students note any points they’d like to work more on, map their progress and list any new regular German verbs they learn, which helps them develop a really useful German verb bank. = Worksheet Format: worksheets can be printed out individually, or as a pack without the cover page, verbs lists and progress template, useful for quick revision, refresher, starters / finishers, and also generally saves on prep costs The answer key is a separate file with six pages, and I generally print this out as a pack for classwork, with groups of students sharing an individual pack. The worksheets also address a broad range of vocabulary and grammar points, such as direct / indirect object pronouns, negative sentences and various question formats. Some sentences include modal verbs and subordinating conjunctions, to ensure that students can practise locating the verb or infinitive accurately. Students may not have engaged with all the language used at this stage, and this makes the activity equally about engaging with new language, as well as practising and reinforcing the current language focus. There are three differentiated conjugation challenges: = Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in sentence format across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding translation. Translating accurately is an important skill for language learners to engage with and master, and this kind of focused practice is really useful for them. = Challenge 2: straightforward conjugation drill: each question gives a German infinitive and a target pronoun. Students write the corresponding German verb conjugation. = Challenge 3: mirrors Challenge 1, with an increased challenge. Students write the German translation from an English sentence, to ensure that they are able to produce as well as recognize both the correct conjugation and an accurate translation.
