This is an integral element to successful language learning. I’ve found that vocabulary lists are a great language learning support resource, and they’re really popular with students too. They work well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference, either in class or at home. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class. These 60 task cards are perfect for developing French language skills in general, as well as for practicing and revising how to tell time in French - there are 60 cards, divided into two sets of 30 questions, full answer key and a recording sheet. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities. The questions are a straightforward introduction to quarter to and quarter past the hour - I generally work with numbers quite quickly with my beginner language students, and move on to task card activities as soon as I can, so that they can develop independent and collaborative learning skills. There are two questions:Quelle heure est-il ? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. The second question is Vrai ou faux ? and students write either vrai or faux - where the answer is faux, remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation. The cards are numbered 1-60 in words, so students should recap those numbers before they work with the challenge cards. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and time creatively and practically too, which is an essential element of successful language learning. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of French numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping beginner French students familiarise themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in French. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on French Numbers 0-31, but also for sub lessons, as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn how to count in French, but also to enjoy working with French, and to feel confident about doing so. All questions are in French, and range in complexity and challenge, both in terms of language and number skills. I’ve used visual prompts such as math symbols to ensure all learners can engage with the questions, and this helps them to begin to infer meaning from context, and to decode cues and prompts to foster understanding. I don’t allow the use of calculators to increase the challenge a little. Some questions focus specifically on French math language, which students do not always engage with very often. The level of math is fairly simple, but certainly draws on prior number and arithmetic learning. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and arithmetic creatively and practically, which is integral to successful language learning. My students also genuinely enjoy creating questions for each other. These German Christmas word searches are a real winner - the Christmas-theme is always a great motivator. There are 33 German Christmas words, and I’ve chosen a selection of more generic Christmas words, and also some which are very German-specific, such as Sankt Nikolaus and Knecht Ruprecht. Students shouldn’t attempt to learn all the vocabulary at once, as the objective of the word searches is to engage with German Christmas vocabulary, to really focus on the individual words, genders and articles, and to have lots of practice at general recall, writing and spelling. The German Christmas vocabulary list is ideal as a long-term reference resource, and really useful for students when they are working more creatively and independently, for example***German Christmas reading comprehension, German Christmas writing activities*** and so on. There is an increasing challenge through the grids, and the differentiation does ensure that all students are challenged. There are 5 German to German grids, with a vocabulary list to complete for additional consolidation. There are also 5 English to German grids, also with a vocabulary list to complete, which is a great way to really work on students’ recall and spelling. Students can identify the level of challenge by the increasing size of the grid, number of words to search for, and the direction the words appear in, which they can see by the direction of the arrows at the top of the grids. I’ve put a couple of extra challenges in too, to encourage students to look really carefully at the words - for example, they may have to find candles and work out what that is in German - only the prompt die Adventskerze appears in the reference list. Answer keys are essential in my view, and I always give them to students. Not only are they a great teacher-time saver, they give students an additional opportunity to engage with language, and help them develop more independence in their learning.
