Reading comprehension: Superman
Part of a series of superhero-themed comprehension worksheets from a reading intervention I ran with Year 6 and Year 7, this text focuses on Captain Marvel’s origins from the Marvel franchise.
Students read the 500 word text and answer the comprehension questions. The answers are included.
Using Pathetic Fallacy to Describe a Setting for Paper 1 Question 5
When approaching Paper 1 Question 5, I advise students to begin with an opening paragraph that uses pathetic fallacy to describe a setting.
Here are 6 examples that use pathetic fallacy to depict the opening.
They also consistently use ambitious tier 2 vocabulary and advanced punctuation to help show the sophistication required for the top band of the mark scheme.
After studying the 6 model paragraphs, students should then move on to create their own pathetic fallacy opening paragraphs.

A detailed lesson, inspired by teaching tip 3 on the recent AQA 2022 examiner report, that guides students on how to write grade 9 topic sentences for a range of literature texts.
There are multiple examples for A Christmas Carol, Macbeth, Lord of the Flies and Power and Conflict that all follow the same structure.
At each stage of the lesson, students use the models to try and generate their own topic sentences for each studied text.
Reader's Theatre fluency intervention booklet
A booklet aimed at helping Year 6 and Year 7 students with developing their reading fluency over 7/8 weeks. Begin the course by assessing students against the fluency rubric. Re-assess again after the 7 week course and measure the improvement. Each session involves students gaining fluency by re-reading an extract several times to build confidence and fluency. Exact guidance for how to run the sessions are provided to help students build up their skills.

Power and Conflict revising 3 Big Ideas in each poem
A lesson that revises 3 key big ideas related to power and/or conflict in each poem from the anthology.
Students then move to analyse how these big ideas are explored in 2 key quotations from each poem.
Suggested answers for both tasks are included.

Describe a very hot place Paper 1 Question 5 - 6 responses to compare
6 Paper 1 Question 5 responses all describing a very hot place - a desert island. This is a useful task for departmental moderation or for getting students to engage with the markscheme to gain a greater appreciation of the style of writing required for the upper bands.
