Are you looking for engaging ways for your high school maths students to review key topics? Whether you need a Fraction Decimal Percent Activity, adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers or reviewing Pythagoras’ Theorem, it’s in the bundle!
Why play maths games with High School students?
High school can be a tough time for students’ engagement with maths. Here’s where maths games can come in! They offer several of advantages that go beyond just rote memorisation:
Games make learning fun! This can be a game-changer (pun intended) for your students who find traditional maths drills boring. Engagement fuels a desire to learn and participate.
Many maths games target specific skills, like fractions, decimals, or pre-algebra. By playing repeatedly, students practice and solidify these concepts in a low-pressure environment.
Maths games often involve challenges that require strategic thinking and creative solutions. This strengthens critical thinking and problem-solving muscles that benefit students in all areas, not just maths.
Games can cater to different learning styles, allowing students to grasp concepts in a way that works best for them. This can be a big help for students who struggle with traditional methods.
Games provide a space to experiment and make mistakes without fear of penalty. This encourages students to take risks and develop a “growth mindset” about maths.
In short, maths games can turn maths from a chore into an engaging and enriching experience for your high schoolers.

Practice number bonds of 10. Students find someone who has the associated fact. e.g. if they are wearing a ‘8 hat’ they would need to find someone wearing a ‘2 hat’. They could prove that they have found the correct partner by using one of the concrete resources shown on the hat and making what they can see on their partners hat. When they put them together, they should make 10. They would then go to a student who is wearing a 10 hat to check that they are bonds of 10.
Students could sort themselves into groups according to their teachers instructions. e.g. smallest to largest, largest to smallest, odds and evens, …
It can also be interesting to allow students to come up with their own games!

Help your students to recall and apply the divisibility rules to make maths calculations more efficient.
Divisibility rules offer your students many advantages when it comes to numbers:
Faster Calculations: Instead of manually dividing a number to see if it’s divisible, your students can use divisibility rules to quickly determine it. This saves time and effort, especially for larger numbers.
Mental Maths Boost: Knowing divisibility rules helps with mental maths as your students can break down calculations involving multiples. For instance, to see if a number is divisible by both 3 and 4, they can apply the rules for each.
Stronger Number Sense: Divisibility rules build a foundation for understanding divisibility itself and how numbers are structured. This paves the way for more complex maths concepts like prime factorisation.
Problem-Solving Efficiency: In various word problems, divisibility rules can be applied to analyse and solve problems quicker.
Confidence and Accuracy: Knowing divisibility rules gives your students more confidence when dealing with multiplication and division. It reduces reliance on calculators and fosters a sense of accuracy when working with numbers.
Benefits for Students:
Engaging & Interactive: Transform learning from memorisation to active exploration with the exciting game and fun activities.
Master Key Maths Skills: Develop a strong understanding and application of divisibility rules, boosting confidence and problem-solving abilities.
