FOR THE LOVE OF LITERATURE

Average Rating4.39
(based on 969 reviews)

I love creating resources and spend far too much time doing it. Currently teaching mostly A-level English Literature, but there are a range of free and paid resources for all ages. I believe in challenging students with a range of ambitious material, but also believe that this needs to be underpinned by explicit direction on HOW students can develop their ideas in written form. Write better... think better... think better...write better... and so on.

Words Origins Through Poetry: Complete Lesson!

(7)
Lesson plan and resource uses John Agard's poem, &'Reporting from the Frontline of the Great Dictionary Disaster&';, to teach students about etymology in a fun and engaging way. It also ties in with poems from other cultures. Could be used as a stand-alone 'fun&' lesson, or to tie in with teaching about the origins of the English language. If you have a lively class, you can get a great performance at the end... it also produces some great display work if you get students to type their work up. Enjoy :)

'Frankenstein' revision guide

I made this last year when teaching 'Frankenstein&' at AS for the OCR English literature spec (although could be adapted).\n\nI kept it to myself for a year but I think it&';s time to share the love. It's very detailed - could give to students as there are loads of activities but also would be useful if you&'re tackling the text for the first time - as a PGCE/NQT in particular, as many bits could be adapted into lesson activities.\n\nFly free, Frankenstein.... into the &';darkness and distance'!

War extracts

War extracts

(14)
I am doing Wilfred Owen with my English lit group and this is something I am going to use with them as an introduction to the topic in order to get them thinking about war. It contains two sets of extracts, war themed. The class will be split into two groups and each has to present what they have found out from the extracts ALONE. Almost as if they were an alien from another planet, what would these extracts tell them about the relation between humans and war- idea is to get them to start thinking critically about texts. Could also use extracts for lots of other purposes…

Writing about character

(8)

A lesson designed to help students write about character succesfully- either for an unseen text or for any text studied in class. . The powerpoint should be self explanatory but the starter activity is matching adjectives to definitions then there is a longer extract there to explore for main, The powerpoint should make what to do clear- for you and them.(ESPECIALLY GOOD FOR BOYS WHO CAN SOMETIMES STRUGGLE WITH EMPATHY BASED TASKS) :)

Understanding the writer's craft KS4 skills

(26)
As with the others the powerpoint is pretty self-explanatory, but the aim of this lesson is to help students understand how meaning is made and be able to write succesfully about it in exams. Overarching objective is to explore techniques used to analyse the way in which writers create particular effects. The extract used is a James Lee Burke one, so quite exciting :) in an englishy way!
