FOR THE LOVE OF LITERATURE

Average Rating4.39
(based on 969 reviews)

I love creating resources and spend far too much time doing it. Currently teaching mostly A-level English Literature, but there are a range of free and paid resources for all ages. I believe in challenging students with a range of ambitious material, but also believe that this needs to be underpinned by explicit direction on HOW students can develop their ideas in written form. Write better... think better... think better...write better... and so on.

Comparing poetry : 'Pike' and 'Trout'

(1)
Copies of the poems, 'pike' by Ted Hughes and 'trout' by Seamus Heaney and a few charts/venns that allow them to compare these two. The powerpoint has pics of a pike - can be used a starter. Once we studied these, they wrote an essay, then a poem describing an animal of their own.
War extracts

War extracts

(14)
I am doing Wilfred Owen with my English lit group and this is something I am going to use with them as an introduction to the topic in order to get them thinking about war. It contains two sets of extracts, war themed. The class will be split into two groups and each has to present what they have found out from the extracts ALONE. Almost as if they were an alien from another planet, what would these extracts tell them about the relation between humans and war- idea is to get them to start thinking critically about texts. Could also use extracts for lots of other purposes…

'To Kill A Mockingbird' - revision powerpoint

(7)
A detailed revision powerpoint, outlining the AQA modern texts exam (although this could be removed/ changed to fit your board) and lots of slides on context, complete with questions encouraging students to make links to the novel.\n\nFinal slide suggests they get into groups and come up with essay plans to past exam questions.

Moon on the Tides: Relationships lessons

Using the excellent material provided by AQA and the TES, i put together powerpoints/ activities for the poems in the 'Relationships&' anthologies. They include activities, information, audio, video links. \n\nYou can pick them up and go. The only one missing is &';To His Coy Mistress' as we approached that in a different way and also, i think some of the audio might be mixed up (don&'t know how or why?!) so do check before you go into lessons.

Writing about character

Writing about character

(8)

A lesson designed to help students write about character succesfully- either for an unseen text or for any text studied in class. . The powerpoint should be self explanatory but the starter activity is matching adjectives to definitions then there is a longer extract there to explore for main, The powerpoint should make what to do clear- for you and them.(ESPECIALLY GOOD FOR BOYS WHO CAN SOMETIMES STRUGGLE WITH EMPATHY BASED TASKS) :)

Ted Hughes and 'Birthday Letters'

(3)
I love, love Ted Hughes and finally, I got to teach 'Birthday Letters' as a coursework text this year. . . very little in the way of teaching resources exists so I've created some. Here's an introductory powerpoint on Hughes and a very comprehensive guide to 'Birthday Letters' - absolutely indebted to Erica Wagner's brilliant book on BL, 'Ariel's Gift...' as well as other miscellaneous activities.I've got to say, I've never taught something that the students have truly LOVED so much. Give it a go...

The Great Gatsby - opening to chapter 2

Powerpoint should be explanatory but: a starter activity on semiotics to get them thinking about signification (interesting links can be drawn between boom of advertising in 1920s). Then group work focusing on the opening description of The Valley of Ashes and first intro to Myrtle and Wilson. \nPlenary activity on magical realism of Fitzgerald (taken from EMC guide) and then a homework essay, closely analysing this passage.(with OCR objectives but could be adapted for other boards)

Introduction to Jane Austen/ 'Persuasion'

(1)
Two introductory resources I used for a y12 group about to start studying Austen's 'Persuasion' for c/work/ Pre-reading activity gets them thinking about openings to a selection of Austen novels (so could be used for any Austen novel). We focused on style and applied critical ideas about entry strategies. Then there is a female character adjective match focusing on chapters 1-3. They have to find supporting quote/evidence to justify their ideas.

'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' vocabulary glossary

(3)
I created a vocabulary glossary for the entire novel, containing words that may be unfamiliar to students. They have to find the definitions themselves - a good weekly homework task I think and could be used for spelling tests too... which students enjoy
