A fully-resourced lesson with a powerpoint and worksheets included. Suitable for AQA Language Paper 2 practice.
**Main focus: Analysing two non-fiction articles on waste and over-indulgence during the festive period. **
Article 1- Plastic found in Christmas jumpers and the impact of ‘fast fashion’ on the environment.
Article 2- How much money Millenials spend on their pets.
Lesson Outline:
Starter task- students write one sentence arguing whether pets should be bought presents (challenge- use a persuasive feature).
Students read the articles and complete the True/False statements based on what they have read.
Compare the articles and explore the attitudes/viewpoints of the writers.
Q5 practice- A teacher was overheard saying:.‘There is far too much waste at Christmas. Young people should stop buying things they don’t need.’ Write a persuasive speech for your school assembly arguing your point of view regarding this statement.
Introduce the grammar and phrases that use ‘have’ and ‘has’.
Students practice using the phrases through a guessing game. They look at the close up of the object and must race to say the target phrase " Have you got a pen?", “Have you eaten a kiwi fruit?” etc.
Show example phrases (gap fill activity) and students need to apply their knowledge and say whether it should be ‘have’ or ‘has’.
Card game- Players ask each other set questions on their question sheets. For example “Have you been to Scotland?” and they choose someone to address the question to. If the player has the matching card they must answer “Yes I have” and the first player can tick it off their sheet. If they don’t have the card they respond “No I haven’t.” and the player’s turn is over.
Full instructions for the card game are included in the ppt- the task requires some cutting preparation but with a guillotine it will not take too long at all. There are 96 colourful cards in total and I found that groups of 4-6 players worked best.
I have included the lesson powerpoint, a PDF printable version of the game cards and also the powerpoint with the card templates so that you can ammend and change the playing cards to suit your needs.

The lesson focuses on the dialogue/role-play between a passenger and an attendant:
*showing a passport,
*asking for a window seat
* receiving a boarding pass
The worksheets include:
*Vocabulary list and cutting/sticking/matching activity
*Create your own passport and holiday photo
*Short comprehension questions
*Colour in the travel stamps
In teams students choose two numbers.
Click on the squares to reveal the pictures and quotations.
If they manage to match the quotation to the speakercorrectly they gain 5 points for their team.

Focus: How to craft a vivid setting in creative writing
On the worksheet handout students have an example extract from the opening of the novel ‘Perfume’ which uses sensory description. Students must then answer the questions an explore how imagery which focuses on the sense of smell can be used to create a vivid setting.
Students then complete a creative writing task and write about a modern day setting in the style of Patrick Suskind.
A lesson I made based on the resources from the British Council website https://learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/sites/teens/files/tour_of_london_-_exercises_1.pdf
Click the sound icon to listen to the dialogue, with each mouse-click a corresponding image comes up for a basic virtual tour.
There are then three activities. Students match the tourist spot to the name, number the places chronologically and guess which tourist destination has been visited based on the review given.
I've also included filler activities- a word search and colouring page.
Two full lessons and activities looking at extracts from Act 3, Scene 6 and Act 4, Scene 2 so students develop a personal response and consider whether Macbeth is a tyrant.
Day 2 of my Roald Dahl themed Summer Camp (originally for Korean EFL students)
Includes:
* A short summary of the story- using images from the film and Quentin Blake illustrations
* A board game and counters that I made (the same rules as 'snakes and ladders')
*Team activity 'Egg Drop' where students must construct a contraption using art supplies to protect their egg when it is dropped from a window.
*Instructions to make decorative peach ornaments out of string, paint, balloons and PVA glue (original idea found on pinterest)
*Links to recipes for making cookies, peach trifle, ladybird cracker snacks and peach pancakes.
*Wordsearch and colouring worksheet.

Five rounds of Christmas related activities.
Used with EFL classes at the end of term.
Round 1- Memory Game
Students have 1 minute to look at the picture and remember as many details as possible. 10 questions.
Round 2- Guess the word
Guess the missing word from the lyrics of famous christmas songs.
10 missing words.
Round 3- British Christmas Food
Guess the name of the food from ABCD multiple choice options.
10 foods.
Round 4- Who is it?
Guess the celebrities whose faces have been covered with Santa beards.
10 celebrities.
Round 5- General Knowledge
10 Christmas Trivia Questions.
Overview:
Students select one quotation for each key scene from the table provided and use it to analyse Macbeth’s character.
Students evaluate on a scale of 1 to 5 whether he comes across as strong or weak.
They then use this to plot Macbeth’s changing character and have a visual representation of his power/weakness across Acts1-5.
This can then be compared to Lady Macbeth’s (included in ppt) and students develop their own interpretations/ justify their opinions.
