In this lesson, students will learn that a mixture is a combination of two or more substances that aren’t chemically joined and can be separated back into their individual substances. They will learn that there are two types of mixtures: heterogeneous and homogeneous and will look at examples of each. They will then look at how these mixtures can be separated before completing a quiz on what they have learnt. Following this, they will carry out 3 investigations of separating mixtures. They will follow the experiment proforma to help them organise, record and analyse their observations before discussing their experiments as a class. In this lesson, students will look at what the properties of materials are e.g. hard, waterproof, reflective, electronically conductive. They will watch an engaging video displaying this and will carry out their own tests on various materials following the experiment sheet. A list of equipment required is detailed as well as example experiments that can be used to test the various materials for their properties. In this lesson, students will learn about how shadows are made and will investigate whether the distance or angle of a light source effects the size of the shadow made by an object. They will be supported in this experiment and will create a line graph to show their results. Finally they will create their own shadow puppet performance. Electricity is a type of energy that can build up in one place or flow from one place to another. Electricity is the flow of electrons. In this lesson, students will learn what electricity is and how it is measured. They will learn about electrical circuits- looking at the symbols for electrical components as well as how to draw circuits. Personification is the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something non-human, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form. This lesson focuses on using personification in poetry. It comes with an engaging powerpoint presentation and the related lesson plan (shown as part of the whole sequence of lessons) and example poems. Children learn what personification is and why it is used in poetry. They then consider the effect of the personification used relating to images shown, thinking critically. In pairs/ small groups, the children then read a number of poems making use of personification discussing how they feel about the poems and language used. As a class then complete a modelled write, taking words and phrases from the children to create a stanza/verse of a poem based on the video clip on Australian bushfires. The children then write an additional stanza to the poem independently making use of metaphors for effect. For the extension task, children guess what image is being described in the poems using the personification for clues. Students will first be taught how to use the column and grid methods to complete these calculations and reminded of the importance of place value. They will then practise using these methods on simple calculations and word problems. Differentiated worksheets are provided which require students to first work out calculations mentally, then use the methods learnt with simple calculations and then with word problems. By the end of the lesson they will have consolidated their understanding of multiplying decimals by integers and been challenged to do so in context. Answers are provided for the worksheets. This lesson focuses on supporting the planning and writing of Free Verse Poetry. It comes with an engaging powerpoint presentation and a possible planning template. Pupils review imagery and the poetic devices used to create it. They complete a matching activity for this. They then find their own image as a stimulus for their poems and write down related words and phrases. A planning frame is also given for the children to use to structure their ideas. Pupils use their planning frame to write their own free verse poems. Possible starters are given as well as a brief checklist of things to remember. Pupils look back at their poems and with feedback from the teacher and their partner, they edit and improve them. Pupils learn their poems off-by-heart and perform them considering rhythm, volume and expression.
