Great Christmas Maths activity with further activity to extend the more able. Helps to develop investigative strategies and consolidate addition. Pupils can work in pairs or individually to find the perfect combination of lights without blowing the fuses! Can be used across KS2, with the option of using a calculator for younger or less able pupils. I would really welcome a review of this resource to help me to continue to develop good resources.

Three Timetabling Investigations

3 investigations involving timetables and calculating time intervals aimed at Year 4, but also suitable for lower ability Year 5 or Year 6. The investigations were created to be solved in mixed ability groups, but could also be solved independently. “The Holiday Club Investigation” asks pupils to create a timetable by selecting activities, working out time intervals on the blank timetable and putting their chosen activities in the appropriate place. Activity cards and a blank timetable help pupils to explore different options. “Mike’s timetable” is a logic problem in which pupils need to follow instructions to create a delivery timetable. It also involves recording times in analogue and 24 hour clock. The answers to this investigation are provided at the end of this resource. Finally pupils are challenged to find their exact age. The “Useful Facts” give pupils everything they need to make the calculation. There are also ideas for extension activities.

Investigating General Statements: Shape

Designed to enable Y4 to Y6 pupils to focus on developing their investigative skills, in particular to explore general statements and provide proof to support their findings. In addition, it will help them to consolidate their understanding of the properties of 2D shapes and how to measure angles using a protractor. The resource is differentiated 3 ways and contains example shapes to help support pupils as well as suggestions for further activities. I’ve also provided the answers! It can be hard to find a resource which allows pupils to develop their investigative skills and present their findings clearly so I hope that this will be helpful.

Systematic Maths Problem Solving: Logic Problems

This resource will help pupils develop a systematic approach to solving a logic problem. The logic problem is a series of clues to help determine pupils scores in a Maths test. The differentiation is in the level of support given to pupils to help them solve the problem. There are 3 Recording Sheets, with A providing the most information for the L.A. and C the least for the most able pupils. These sheets also make pupils record their method, so you can see evidence of systematic work. There is a detailed answer sheet which explains the method, making marking easy! Pupils can then use the skills they have gained to create their own problem. A step by step guide is provided, with a Planning sheet and a Recording sheet. There are also extension ideas. Or you can use these resources to help create your own problems. Suitable for Y5 and 6, could also be used to extend able Y4 pupils.
