The Grinch's Heart
A resource designed for inward reflection around Christmas time.
To look beyond the materialistic aspects of Christmas and find what makes our own heart grow, just as The Grinch’s had. Christmas can be overwhelming for many adults and children and focusing on the things that make us happy, content and loved during these times can be helpful. A word mat is provided as a guide to support those in sentence creation.
Adapted this year (2022) to include the idea of thinking about parts of our bonnie wee Scotland that makes our hearts grow, to be used as Christmas cards for those newly settled in Scotland.

Lyric Analysis - Muppet Christmas Carol
Using two songs from The Muppet Christmas Carol, you can analyse the change in Scrooge from before and after his visits from the ghosts.
Firstly watching and exploring the song ‘Scrooge’ you can ask the children to highlight and analyse lyrics that stand out to them. Secondly you will then use the song ‘Thankful Heart’ and do the same.
This can be displayed in a jotter or on a poster with a visualisation of Scrooge looking grim and miserable on one side and enlightened on the other.
For an example of the jotter layout, check instagram for a reel showing more.
As ever, I would love to see how your learners have used this resource so if possible, please tag me on instagram @TeachingInTechnicolour or twitter @InTechnicolour.

Dystopian Writing - A World Without Mathematics
Dystopian Writing Task Resource
Engage Your Students with A Dystopian Writing Task Resource!

They will follow a brave protagonist battling against an antagonist who has eliminated math, leading to chaos and disorder. This resource encourages critical thinking about the importance of mathematics in society as well as narrative and imaginative writing skills.
What’s Inside:
Model Writing Example: A sample narrative that highlights key elements of dystopian narrative, providing a clear template for students to read and analyse. This has an AI generated image to accomany it and help inspire the idea of the antagonist villain.
Planning Page included this Learning Intention and Success Criteria as well as prompting questions and examples to help inspire your children before they begin.
Learning Intention: To create and gradually develop interesting plots, characters, and settings (ENG 2-31a).
Success Criteria:
An engaging title to draw in the reader.
A vivid setting and context for the story.
Gradual development of the background and plot.
Introduction and description of interesting and believable characters.
Use of figurative language techniques: alliteration, similes, and metaphors.
An ending that clarifies the protagonist’s aim and goal.
Defeating with Decimals
Here are two word documents in the style of letters to children: one from a vampire hunter and one from a witch hunter. Both letter’s are about working with a potion recipe to defeat the monsters. The recipes are for one bottle and then there is differentiation for the children to upscale the recipe to larger quantities. Both letters require the use of decimals - for the vampires it is to one decimal place and for the witches it is to two. Both are accompanied by a teacher’s answer guide.
