Teach a lesson on poverty cycle (L6), and then following lesson (L7), students should watch the 40min video 'Slum Survivors&' from youtube and make notes to help them complete this task (L8). The task and level descriptors are written on the sheet. The aim was to develop empathy but also to look at causes, effects, and solutions to the poverty cycle. Given to Yr 9. Students had looked at social, economic, and environmental categorisations prior to this.\nImages used from a free sample of a Nelson-Thornes pdf.

Why do people live near volcanoes?

This is an ICT research task which requires students to access a page from The Geography Site by David Robinson. (Whilst no material has been copied from this site, I was unable to contact the author to ask for permission when citing the website.)\nStudents should choose sheet depending on their attainment. Sheets A+B should have written answers put into books, whereas students write on Sheet C. The exercise was partly designed to get students to write in full sentences. It was aimed at Year 9 students of all abilities.

I will be using at the end of each topic for students to review their knowledge. These two sheets break down all the concepts/key questions/content that should be covered.\nStudents should read the table at the top for instructions: tick if happy, question mark if unsure, cross if more needs doing in the area.\n\nCopied from OCR materials.

Cold Environments Topic. Heavily based on past exam questions (in powerpoints). L1 - far more interactive L2 - a bit chalk and talk as was running out of ideas! L3 - erosional and depositional landforms - playdoh! L4 - need Blue Planet DVD L5 - exam practice L6 - start to look at 3 main case studies for development L7 - Conflict in Alaska L8 - requires internet research Thanks to producers of linked material. (Orange book is Raw - Philip Allan textbook, yellow/blue book is Dove et al - OCR textbook)

Whydoes Omar get paid so little to make footballs?

(2)
A lesson aimed at Year 7 which is based on work from Geog.1. The lesson explores a boy from Pakistan who makes footballs and why is he trapped in this viscious circle. Students I've taught have really loved the &'What if...&'; discussion. Normally get them to discuss with person next to them for 2 mins then feedback, then move onto next one. All resources and a lesson plan and powerpoint included.

Just some different things to try if your brain has shutdown. Some old favourites in here but it might give you one or two ideas to try. If you want any more details about some of these ideas (like where to get the resources) and/or how I use them, please contact me. Can of course be adapted for other Key Stages.

Good as a first lesson to see what they know or a revision lesson. The lesson is essentially the challenge which runs all lesson. Photocopy the challenge and the points sheet. Do not read through with class, let them crack on with it. Where it says choose appropriate map, have A3 photocopies of American and European world maps to choose from. Follow up with WWW/EBI (or NDT). Homework to annotate proper copies of tectonic maps.

Please find step-by-step guides and templates for 4 main command words for Geography A Level: Explain Analyse Evaluate Assess Insert the powerpoint slides into your lessons when you introduce a specific exam question (change the question obviously!) and give out of a copy of the template for students to fill in. Gradually remove this scaffold over time. I made this based on examboard advice and literature.

There are lots of different ones on TES but I thought I would add my contribution to geography level descriptors.\n\nEach level is a mountain with skills on how to reach the peak. It's a bit cheesy.
