Black Lives Matter: Why I am No Longer Talking To White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge.

(1)
Black Lives Matter: Why I am No Longer Talking To White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge. This lesson takes the key themes of the book ‘Why I am No Longer Talking To White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge’ and attempts to distill them into a format ready for a class room discussion. Ideal for discussions on race during a tutor period or at the end of a unit of work that features discussion on race. It is broken into the following stages: Intro to the author and initial mind mapping. A look at the history of black people, and their contribution, to British society. A discussion of how these historic experiences have created systemic racism – this is the crucial element of the lesson, to explain to students that being ‘colour blind’ can cause its own problems by neglecting to engage with the realities of black people. What is ‘white privilege’ and what could be done to stop it? A look at the NFL’s “Rooney Rule”. PEE paragraph on the Rooney Rule. Ending thoughts and development of mind maps. Extension task: Read Eddo-Lodge’s article. EAL Task: Keyword focus sheet I do not for a second pretend to be an expert in these matters but this is my attempt to introduce the discussion of systemic racism into my classroom. I hope it can be of some use to you in your classrooms too. If you feel I have said something wrong or phrased something insensitively please contact me at thomas@wolseyacademy.com and we can make corrections together. Hope it helps.

The Falklands Conflict 1982

(1)
A lesson designed to take students through the causes and events of the Falklands Conflict and end with a developed paragraph discussing the factors behind the British victory. There is enough content here to easily stretch across 2 (if not 3!) lessons. It has also been successfully taught to KS2 and 4 - but also to Sea Cadet groups across the UK. It is a topic that is rarely taught in schools - but one that is fascinating and gets students engaged. A useful lesson for the end of term or as part of a wider study on Thatcher’s Britain and/or the Cold War. Lesson sequence as follows: Where is the Falklands? Guess the location. Why was it invaded? – Quiz Quiz Trade Thatcher’s response  Reading comprehension The task force  Match up task The taskforce  How would you structure it? The Belgrano  Right or wrong? The battle and landing events  Relay. Factors for success  Diamond 9 Pick a factor and turn it into a PEEKA paragraph. COP28 $1bn to save the Earth - climate crisis challenge

A task to last a few lessons. Students to watch a video by the Economist on how 5 experts would spend $1bn to ‘save the oceans’ and then expand the task themselves to create a business plan for how to spend $qbn to save the earth. A template helps them structure their research and present their projects to the class. To tie in with Dubai COP28 but can be used at any time - of for any COP. I doubt they’ll agree to save the world anytime soon, so I imagine this lesson can be reused and recycled again and again :) Wolsey Academy, a non-profit resource provider, directs all profits to various charities, including refugee support, youth sports, educational programs, and carbon capture, achieving a carbon-negative status. Introduction to Business - Summer Project - Bee Fearless

An entry level guide to Business Studies by using the excellently accessible book ‘Bee Fearless’ by Mikaila Ulmer. Our school uses this as a summer project for our student to complete before they begin the Business course. Combined with reading the book this presentation acts as a worksheet, guiding students to reflect on what they are reading and to engage with several business key concepts. We find student that complete this task come in much more motivated and knowledgeable than those that do not. This book came as a recommendation from the Business Teacher Book Club (Twitter @BusinessTeach11 – please join us). Inspired By.... Janesville: An American Story

(0)
Janesville: An American Story, by Amy Goldstein. 2017. The 2017 Business Book of the Year. It tells the story of Janesville, Wisconsin, home of a large GM car factory – until it closed in 2008. This is the story of what happened next. To understand modern America, you need to understand Janesville. Teaching as I do mostly foreign children the view from outside is that America is still a land of wealth and opportunity. To see its people, react and vote, in a manner that suggests otherwise is deeply puzzling. Outside the country the US voter’s desperation for change looks merely like ignorance and hatred for everyone else. Outsiders need to understand that large parts of this once mighty nation have essentially been gutted thanks to globalisation and technological change. This lesson hopes to address that need. With a strong focus on EAL needs and vocabulary it tries to tell the story of the negatives of globalisation. It is part of a wider mini-SOW on Globalisation I have made especially for EAL students. I’d highly recommend teaching this lesson in the context of the wider SOW so students get a real appreciation of the larger forces at work. Hope it helps. Unit 3, Edexcel, IGCSE ICT. 26 Lessons in total – including three progress check & quiz lessons. These lessons were made for students in the Middle East and have a strong focus on EAL and keyword acquisition/application. Each lesson has 1-8 keywords on easy to use cards that fit into the lesson activity and also make excellent printable revision resources (the end of unit test lesson features them all in one place). Each lesson begins with a different active learning activity, a mini-plenary and a written or creative ICT task requiring the correct application of the keywords. All have stretch questioning to the main activities. All include keyword literacy worksheets. Wolsey Academy has had a lot of success with this SOW with EAL students who have really progressed in their understanding of the technical vocabulary involved with the ICT IGCSE. Millions of enslaved Africans are forced into bondage and shipped across the Atlantic to work on the plantations that European farmers had carved out of the America (after killing off the native peoples that used to live there).
