I have been a teacher for over 20 years - all the stuff I upload has been tried and tested in my classroom. I don't mind a discussion on Twitter too where I also share new resources. I now have a personal website: https://andylutwyche.com/

The Avengers' Data Handling Issue - Displaying

(10)
The Avengers need your help to display this data successfully, and also calculate some averages etc. This builds up from low ability to high ability in stages, but is designed to be 'dipped into' where you need to. It covers from bar charts, through scatter graphs and frequency polygons, up to histograms and contains the calculations that go with each. The teachers' notes are just as a guide and don&'t need to be adhered to, but I have tried to guess the kinds of calculations that students might perform. Transparency of the title pages sorted!

I found this poster with various numbers regarding the World Cup in Brazil and made this activity from it. Change the questions at will. I have also put a link to the website 'My Life In Numbers' as that has a new 'Live Event' measuring from the start of the tournament.

Baking Bad - Season 5 - Data Handling

Help William 'Billy' Black anaylise the data he has to see if he will make enough before his abduction by aliens. This includes reading pictograms, bar charts, pie charts, frequency polygons, finding three averages and estimating the mean. I'm sure you can all come up with other calculations/interpretations that they can make too!

Defuse The Bomb - Powers

(2)
Powers calculations to get correct so that the student can defuse the bomb successfully. This is based upon squares and cubes but ventures into other powers of 2 and 10.

Defuse The Bomb - Bidmas

(0)
The usual story but with some Bidmas/Bodmas questions. If you’ve not seen these before then the students must answer the questions correctly in order to know the order in which to defuse the bomb.

Baking Bad - Season 2 - Surface Area and Volume

This help William 'Billy' Black calculate how much grease-proof paper he needs plus how much each cake tine can hold. The shapes go from cuboids to a cylinder to a hemisphere to a frustum, so you can start and finish where you like.

Speed Camera Dilemma - Box Plots

(8)
A student asked me in a lesson today 'Who is ever going to use this in real life?'. So I did this as an example. Students choose on which 2 of 5 roads should speed cameras be installed and explain why they made their choice.

Careless Casey - Geometry I

Casey is doing the AQA Further Maths Level 2 Certificate but keeps making mistakes; can your class help Casey and explain what went wrong? This time Casey is tackling circle theorems, trigonometric identities, trigonometric equations and surds (trigonometry in right-angled triangles). Spot the mistakes…

Careless Casey - Algebra IV

Casey’s tackling quadratic sequences, quadratic inequalities, factorising cubics using the factor theorem and solving quadratics “in disguise” but making errors again and need your class’ help. Ideal for discussion in class… Designed for use in the AQA Further Maths Level 2 Certificate course.

Careless Casey - Coordinate Geometry

Casey is making mistakes in the AQA Further Maths Level 2 Certificate chapter on Coordinate Geometry, involving gradients, circles (equations), dividing lines in a ratio; can your class help Casey out? This works nicely in class and gets students discussing mathematics. Typo corrected…

Clumsy Clive On Angles

(11)
Four of Clive’s “homework” sheets to correct and explain where he’s gone wrong. There are four to complete: a “basic” one, one on parallel lines, one on polygons and finally one on circle theorems. The basic and parallel lines ones have 5 questions to correct; the other two have 4 questions to look at. These are designed to encourage discussion between students and then to share that discussion with the teacher as there’s not always one way to correct a question. I introduced these before the holidays and they went very well.

Casey is at it again whilst going through the AQA Further Maths Level 2 Certificate course. Algebra III is essentially functions so this includeds domain/range, equations of functions given two points, composite functions, functions split in to three distinct parts. The usual correct and explain stuff which encourages discussion in class.

Casey is making mistakes again, this time involving difference of two square, rearranging formulae, algebraic fractions and completing the square where the coefficient of x squared is not 1 (and is negative). The aim is to get classes discussing methods and deepening understanding and is aimed at the AQA Further Maths Level 2 Certificate course (Chapter 2).

I've no idea where I got these (if they were yours then message me and I will give credit as it's certainly due) but I only had a paper copy so I have typed them up because I use them every year. They do exactly what they say on the tin. I have added my own one with slightly harder shapes entitled Cake Joke, but it's the same thing (error corrected).

Defuse The Bomb - Fractions, Decimal, Percentages

The Mathematician, that notorious terrorist, has put a series of bombs around the country, but each has a clue to defuse it. These cover many aspects of fractions, decimals and percentages and are numbered so that they get increasingly difficult. As I say, my classes like these as starters/plenaries, hence there are so many.
