Hidden thinking skills poster: Team work, problem solving, discussion, 2D shapes

(1)
Teamwork exercise based around trying to recreate a hidden poster by working as a team. This version has a 2D shape poster so could be used when learning about properties of shape - pupils must look at the poster one at a time then return and describe to the team what they have seen. (i.e. there is a red parallelogram in the top left hand corner etc...) The same idea could be used for other topics - you just need another poster. Great for team work, ice breakers, discussion and lots of fun too! Please let me know if you like using this resource, thanks!

A fun vibrant lesson to introduce sample space diagrams. You will need 2 dice. Roll the dice and add them and the car with that total moves forward - who will win?! Pupils then create the sample space and calculate the probability of winning for each car. Now play the game again, and discuss the results. This also includes a Y7 probability assessment with ms. (I have also used this with Y6 after SATs as a fun introduction to probability ready for KS3)

Shape and Number Properties - Reasoning and Questioning Game - Guess What!

(0)
Remember the classic children's game Guess Who? Well this is Guess What! Designed to support and encourage childrens' mathematical reasoning and verbal questioning through playing a game. There are two versions - the shape game and the numbers game. The teacher chooses a shape or number and secretly writes this down on a piece of paper which is hidden from the children. Children then have to ask mathematical questions to eliminate shapes / numbers to ultimately guess the teacher's shape / number. Only questions with "yes" or "no" answers can be asked. E.g. Is your shape 3D? Does you shape have any curved edges? Does your shape have any equal sides? etc. Suitable for aged 9-14 children. Children can play whole class versus the teacher or in pairs in their book (to do this they just need to draw a 6 by 4 square grid in their books to correspond with the game board projected on the whiteboard! Lots of fun for children to enjoy their maths learning.

Estimation Fun Games

(1)
These Estimation games are fun for all ages! Split your class into 5 teams and display the question and picture on the interactive whiteboard. Play the timer and the teams will have 30 seconds to discuss their best estimate for that question. Then take each teams' estimate and reveal the answer. Closest team gets three points, second closest two points and third closest gets one point. Other teams get nothing! Features 3 versions (1 for each term) with mixed questions - perfect for end of term fun - students will surprise themselves at how good (and bad in some cases!) their estimates are, whilst learning interesting and new facts at the same time. Tried and tested with my own classes for several years, students love it!

Spot the Mistake: Area and Perimeter Misconceptions

(1)
Generate great discussion and lots of opportunities for questioning, with this lesson designed to target common misconceptions for the topic of Area and Perimeter. Each slide has a question with 3 possible answers. Sometimes one or two are correct, sometimes none. The lesson is based around a discussion of, - Who is correct? - What have the others done wrong? Pupils need to work together in pairs or teams and just need a whiteboard/paper to make notes. This makes for some really interesting discussion and this lesson has been used for teaching training purposes as it really highlights pupils thinking on the topic and the common misconceptions. Just reassure them that it’s OK to make mistakes and learn from them! Suitable upper for KS2/KS3
