Generate great discussion and lots of opportunities for questioning, with this lesson designed to target common misconceptions for the topic of Area and Perimeter.
Each slide has a question with 3 possible answers.
Sometimes one or two are correct, sometimes none. The lesson is based around a discussion of,
- Who is correct?
- What have the others done wrong?
Pupils need to work together in pairs or teams and just need a whiteboard/paper to make notes.
This makes for some really interesting discussion and this lesson has been used for teaching training purposes as it really highlights pupils thinking on the topic and the common misconceptions.
Just reassure them that it’s OK to make mistakes and learn from them! Suitable upper for KS2/KS3
A fun vibrant lesson to introduce sample space diagrams. You will need 2 dice. Roll the dice and add them and the car with that total moves forward - who will win?!
Pupils then create the sample space and calculate the probability of winning for each car. Now play the game again, and discuss the results.
This also includes a Y7 probability assessment with ms.
(I have also used this with Y6 after SATs as a fun introduction to probability ready for KS3)
A deadly virus is sweeping Mathland and turning people in to Zombies. Which ever team has the Virus Cure when the Infected Zombie Value reaches 100, wins. Plan your strategy carefully and use the spooky character cards with special powers (in the form of maths operations) wisely. Characters include Frankie, The Mummy, The Pump King, Warty Witch, The Count, Dr Egg Head, Scary Spider, Zombie Dude, Devil Ghost, Knight Bones and Boo Boo. The Special Monster Maths Power cards allow you to practice rounding to the nearest 10, square numbers, prime numbers, adding and subtracting and work with place value digits, whilst gaining control of the all important Virus Cure card for your team. For an extra challenge there are 3 extra versions of the board to play - the prime number game board, the square number game board and the negative numbers edition whose board spans from -49 to 50. The class teacher can help all teams keep track of the Infected Zombie value by annotating the provided game board on the interactive whiteboard. There is a Powerpoint version to display which will help all teams decide their tactics and play their next card. Do they steal the Virus Cure now? Or wait until later in the game? But by then will it be too late? Will another team play a better strategy? Simply print out and laminate the game cards if the deck of cards is to be used year after year, but well worth it as children aged 8 - 15 will love using their basic maths skills whilst having fun! Even older students enjoy the strategic and fast paced team game along with the funky branding. Guaranteed satisfaction any time of term if studying rounding, prime, square or negative numbers or for end of term fun. There is also a Christmas Edition and Super Heroes Edition of this game.

This engaging cross-curricular pack investigates both rotational and reflectional symmetry by combining Maths and Art!
Aimed at discovering symmetry in KS2, this pack includes teaching Powerpoints with video links and a workbook mixing Maths SATs style questions (with answers) with opportunities for artwork based on Symmetry.
Pupils will first investigate reflectional and rotational symmetry using masks, tile patterns, and tracing paper with options for creating portraits and skylines. Rotational Symmetry patterns can then be made using ICT, tracing paper and paper snowflakes. Pupils spend time investigating symmetry with tracing paper and mirrors and deepening their understanding by producing Art which could also be used to produce a great classroom display. Pupils then move on to answer past SATs questions on symmetry without using aids.
(NB: To make full use of this resource Youtube access will be required for video tutorials. Art materials will be also required for the Art projects)

Teamwork exercise based around trying to recreate a hidden poster by working as a team.
This version has a 2D shape poster so could be used when learning about properties of shape - pupils must look at the poster one at a time then return and describe to the team what they have seen. (i.e. there is a red parallelogram in the top left hand corner etc...)
The same idea could be used for other topics - you just need another poster. Great for team work, ice breakers, discussion and lots of fun too!
Please let me know if you like using this resource, thanks!
