Miss Pipkin's Best and Worst Lessons.

Two reading passages - this teacher's worst ever lesson and her best, with language exercises. It&'s good to let the kids know that we teachers are human too, occasionally vulnerable and also capable of doing silly things.

Snow Day - The Return Journey

A reading comprehension, with language exercises. This follows on from my reading comprehension 'Snow Day&'. This is differentiated - EAL students can put the verbs in the past simple, while more advanced students can tackle the discussion points.
The Four Ts

The Four Ts

This is a powerpoint with the four Ts to promote independent learning: THINK, TEXTBOOK, TEAM, TEACHER. I've made these up based on the 4 Bs (brain/buddy/book/boss). I like the Ts better - but then, I would, wouldn&'t I? And there definitely is no apostrophe! I&';ve added the 4 Ts on one sheet.

I made this for a year 9 group doing Employability. The first topic was 'Punctuality.&' There are some EAL beginners in the group, so a few slides have got exercises they can access.

Past simple tense comprehensions and exercises.

A variety of worksheets with the main language focus being the past simple tense. There are suggested activities on each sheet. 'Holiday did you&' is a list of questions for pair work coming back from the summer holiday. &';Crystal is not a bully' and &'Things you should do before you die&'; might be of use in PHSCE.

The Singing Starlings

This is a reading passage, written as a fable, with exercises. There is a 'true or false&', some vocabulary work, and other suggested tasks. My students particularly enjoyed discussing the moral and thinking up some of their own.

The first sheet is to practise past simple and to explain 'embarrassment&'. The second one is a follow up story, past simple or past continuous? After the exercise, you can cut the pictures out for sequencing. Ask the students to put the story together using time connectives, &';First, then, after that' etc.. You could practise making questions by having the students prepare qs for Jake, using the &'wh&'; words and build this into a hotseat activity.

This is a 20 slide ppt, each slide having a maths verb or verb phrase on it e.g. select/expand/calculate/ draw the line of best fit. A starter to promote familiarity with and/ or practice with some of the language needed to answer maths questions. The anagram appears, then the answer floats in.

A short play: 'Reporting Live'

Does reporter Joe learn an important lesson, or does he just think about his own ambitions? There are 10 parts (this could be adapted). I've written this for my EAL students to practise the past simple tense, but it's not exclusively an EAL resource.

The General Election May 2015: the candidates.

(13)
This is a ppt with basic information about the main candidates. The description comes first, then the names fly in, giving your students a chance to name the candidates. There are some tasks, including a true and false activity. Lots of images to promote discussion.

Jack makes his New Year's Resolutions.

I uploaded a different copy of this earlier, which I have now deleted. This one is better! It's a reading passage with exercises, including making resolutions for different people and a cloze exercise. Also, the main passage uses &'said&'; many times - presenting a good opportunity to practise using alternative words to 'said&'.

Jack's New Year's Resolutions

A passage about a boy making new year resolutions, with exercises. Can be used as a preliminary before students think up new year's resolutions for themselves. The template is by Baiba.

Fun Lexical Activities

I made this for my Yr 7 Nurture group, for fun literacy starters. There are 27 slides, comprising 25 activities. No photocopying necessary - all activities can be done from the board. There is a variety of lexical activities: anagrams; match-ups; gap fills; error correction; find the hidden words; sentence formation; supply the adjectives and adverbs; replace the missing vowels and more. I have used a frame from fppt.com.
