This resource contains two functional skills writing activities with instructions for the pupils to follow. The tasks could be used for either Entry Level 3 or Level 1 with the pupils’ outcome determining their level. You could ask the pupils to plan their work before writing if you wish. The first text asks pupils to write a letter applying for permission to use the Spooktacular Ballroom as the venue for a Halloween Party that they are hosting. In the second task, pupils become magazine writers. They are asked to review a Halloween party that they have attended for their magazine. We at Engage Education believe in making functional fun. This resource asks students to write a Christmas dinner invitation. There is a task sheet giving instructions and a colourful template on which to write the invitations. These tasks are differentiated two ways, one for a written invitation and one for an invitation in the form of a poster. This resource consists of a powerpoint presentation and some worksheets to use with Chapter 9 of Michael Morpurpo’s ‘Private Peaceful’. The main activity is for pupils to write a 1st Person narrative as if they are a soldier in World War 1. This narrative will centre on a particular World War 1 setting selected by the pupils. This could be the trenches, no-man’s-land, a hospital, a French village or any other suitable settings pupils think of. The powerpoint helps to organise the lesson, checking pupils’ understanding of the chapter and setting up class/group discussions. The worksheets consist of a writing plan for pupils to complete, lined paper for the writing activity and a barbed wire word wall for pupils to complete as an extension activity. In this they decorate the barbed wire lined page with words and phrases related to World War 1. This resource can last for between 2 and 4 hours depending on how much time you allow for each activity. This is the lesson plan: • Pre-Reading Discussion: What do you already know about World War 1? • Listen to/read the 9th chapter of the novel. • Check your comprehension of the story by describing what happened using the images on the lesson powerpoint. • Class Discussion: • What have you learned about World War 1 from the chapter? • Class/Group Discussion: World War 1 Settings Verbally describe the World War 1 settings shown on the powerpoint • Lesson Activity: Write A 1st Person Narrative As A Soldier In WW1 Describing A Setting • Complete a writing plan for your description. • Write your 1st person narrative. • Extension Work: • Create A Barbed Wire Word Wall Decorate the barbed wire poster with words or phrases related to World War 1. In these resources, pupils are given visuals and some words and are asked to use them to create some simple sentences. They are expected to use capital letters and full stops correctly and to choose additional High Frequency words and spell them independently. They are asked to repeat this process with different visuals and words a variety of times. This is the first step in preparing pupils to write a short text independently. The images help more visual learners and the given words provide ideas for what to write about and structure. These resources can be used as a class activity, as extension work or as homework. These two resources help pupils to write well punctuated sentences while adding adverbs to their work. Clear examples are given to students in the form of word lists and example sentences. The activities use strong visuals to stimulate the pupils ideas and imaginations. The students begin by being given simple sentences with images that they have to rewrite to include adverbs. Students then progressively write with less support until they are asked to write a series of sentences including adverbs independently. These resources can be used as class activities, as extension work or as homework.

This resource is designed to be used with Chapter 6 of the novel Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo. This chapter is titled ‘Nearly Five To One’. The main event of this chapter is the disappearance of Big Joe. This resource contains a powerpoint presentation that is used to recap on the novel’s previous chapters, to check the pupils’ comprehension of this chapter and to generate a discussion on how the pupils think the characters have developed in the story so far, and/or how their opinion of them has changed. This resource also includes some worksheets. These contain a lesson(s) plan, 2 activities and some extension work. The first activity asks pupils to write about how they think the characters have developed in the story so far, and/or how their opinion of them has changed . The second is a functional skills task which asks pupils to write an advertisement for a newspaper asking people to help search for Big Joe. The extension asks pupils to complete a table for 5 characters from the story by adding as many suitable adjectives as they can t describe them. They are asked to use a thesaurus to do this. This resource should take at least two lessons to complete, but it could be used for more depending on how much time you allow for the discussions. This resource consists of two speaking and listening discussions for Functional Skills English Level 1. It is for staff use, providing a topic for a discussion and a checklist to assess the pupils progress. Although this assessment follows the theme of Christmas, it can easily be edited for any topic and used multiple times. There are two pages for each activity, one for teachers to assess multiple pupils and one for assessing one pupil which can be placed in this pupil’s file. The first discussion asks pupils to imagine that they are arranging a charity Christmas dinner. As a group they must discuss what food and drink to serve, what activities to put on, where to hold it and what charity to raise money for. The must make a final decision as a group to end the discussion. The second discussion poses the question, “Is Christmas too commercialised?” In a group, students must discuss this question and come to a group conclusion. This discussion is linked to our Christmas Functional Skills English Level 1 reading resource. Both discussion should last around 15 minutes, but it depends on the number of pupils involved. This series of resources is to be taught while studying ‘Of Mice and Men’. It is designed predominantly for classes in Special Needs schools in the UK. The resources help the pupils prepare for various qualifications. This includes Entry Level English, Functional Skills English and GCSE English Language. In total, there are 11 lessons in the series. Each lesson is differentiated. This means that the lessons are set at EL1, EL2, EL3 and at wither Level 1 Functional Skills or GCSE. There are reading, writing and speaking and listening lessons. Both the writing and speaking and listening lessons can be taught using various marking schemes. These lessons can also be used in main stream education for pupils working either below GCSE level or at a low GCSE level. This lesson prepares pupils for various English writing exams.

This is the 2nd lesson in the Private Peaceful series and it is to be taught with Chapeter 2: ‘Twenty To Eleven’. It centres on the character of Big Joe. It could be taught as one lesson or as a short series of lessons. It consists of a comprehension exercise, a writing plan, a writing task about Big Joe and an extension activity.
