A 6 week unit of work on the medium of printing. This unit would be suitable for years 3 - 6. Pupils will study a variety of contemporary artists working in print. Pupils will explore a range of printing techniques including printing with found objects, collagraph and foam board printing. The final outcome of the unit is a foam board print, based around your History, Geography or English topic.

A variety of resources to cover the Year 5 Science objective: I can compare and group together everyday materials on the basis of their properties including their [hardness, solubility, transparency], conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets. Three, practical investigations to cover ‘Working Scientifically’ objectives: Planning different types of scientific enquiries to answer questions, including recognising and controlling variables where necessary; Taking measurements, using a range of scientific equipment, with increasing accuracy and precision, taking repeat readings when appropriate; Recording data and results of increasing complexity using scientific diagrams and labels, classification keys, tables, scatter graphs, bar and line graphs; Reporting and presenting findings from enquiries, including conclusions, causal relationships and explanations of and degree of trust in results, in oral and written forms such as displays and other presentations; Identifying scientific evidence that has been used to support or refute ideas or arguments.

Children love this unit! Originally for Year 5 but could be used in Year 6 as revision or adapted for use from Year 3. It is based on a hilarious mockumentary (in the style of David Attenborough), which follows the journey of a plastic bag to its final resting place in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. I am based on the Isle of Wight, so the historical focus is on the Isle of Wight Rifles - the regiment based there during WW1. You could use as is, or adapt to include the regiment in your location. Now with SATs style reading questions! This eight lesson reading unit uses the Marcia Williams version of Oliver Twist (although any suitable abridged version could be used instead, or indeed, the musical film). The unit also focuses on the historical context of the book, enabling children to visualise what life was like in Victorian England and for those living in workhouses. The life of Charles Dickens is also explored. The reading objectives covered are from the Y5 curriculum, but this unit could easily be adapted for years 3 - 6. All video links, text extracts and worksheets are included, so you’ll have everything you need, except the book itself.

A six-week unit of painting, suitable for Y3 - Y6. Covers colour mixing, wash, composition, layering, warm and cool colours; Focus artist - Hokusai (the Great Wave off Kagawa); Links with geography (earthquakes and volcanoes).

A series of lessons to cover some of the objectives for Living Things and their Habitats (Year 5). Included: Plant reproduction (dispersal, germination, pollination, fertilisation); Working scientifically: Investigation into factors affecting germination; Branched keys and classification. This work doesn’t include information on life-cycles, so this would need to be added in if teaching alongside.

A writing unit based on the book ‘Heroes’ by David Long. Includes work on relative clauses and cohesive devices. Suitable for Year 5 or 6. Also links with World War I History (as the focus stories are about war dogs).
