There are five engaging poems, each one with an accompanying task card and answer key. ENGAGING POEMS The poems have been written to engage students. They are all focused around the end of the school year. Because there are five poems included, there is plenty of scope for teachers writing their own additional questions or creating extra activities. A RANGE OF TASKS The five task cards all focus on the skill of inference. They encourage students to use the sentence stem, ‘I know this because in the text it says’ in order to give evidence for their answers. Mayan Gods Poems Comprehension This Mayan gods poems comprehension reading and history activity includes four poems about Ancient Mayan gods and goddesses. Each one then has a set of questions for pupils to revise their knowledge of each deity. This also gives pupils the chance to practise their reading comprehension skills. The deities covered are: Itzamna, Chaac, Ix Chel and Kinich Ahau. The cross-curricular nature of this activity means that children will be able to practise both their history skills (learning about Ancient Mayan gods) and reading comprehension skills at the same time. The comprehension questions include retrieval and inference questions and also author’s intent and vocabulary ones. There are a mix of circle the answer, one word, one sentence and longer answers. Some questions require evidence from the text. All answers are included (sample answers where more than one answer would be acceptable). Known as the night of power, Laylat ul Qadr takes place during the last 10 days of Ramadan. It is a night of deep worship, prayer and giving to charity. The lesson covers what Laylat ul Qadr is and how it forms part of Ramadan, how people mark this date and why certain activities take place. The main activity is to take on the role of Aadil, who is writing an email to his boss requesting time off work to mark Laylat ul Qadr. They must use what they have learnt to persuade his boss. Links are made with persuasive techniques, so this would fit well with a persuasive writing unit in writing lessons. If you’re looking for Y6 SATS revision for ordering the events of a text, then look no further. There are 5 fun stories included in this order the events booklet. There are then 2 order the events questions for each story (so 10 in total). Ordering the events is an important reading comprehension skill and one that the children are usually required to demonstrate in Year 6 SATS. Also included is a guide to remind pupils about the steps that they need to take in order to order the events. This could be enlarged and put on a display or working wall to remind pupils how to order the events in a systematic way. The order the events stories and worksheets are arranged in a booklet, making it perfect for a homework activity or for a supply day as you near SATS. It means that you can just print and go.
