A great quiz to do just before your students break up for the Christmas holidays questions are broken down into different styles to keep it interesting and are as follows: Emoji round - Students guess what Christmas phrase is being hinted at and they are given a clue as to how many words this contains - three questions in total using this style. Anagrams - Students are given a mixed up word and have to decode it - Three questions in total for this. Other celebrations - questions focused on different religious holidays to make the quiz more inclusive, great for equality and diversity. 2 questions but in two parts as the second one is a picture based question. Christmas songs - match up the lyrics and match up the band. 4 different song lyrics and 4 different bands. Christmas films - student’s look at pictures and try and guess the film that is being referred to 4 photos in total. Answers - I will also include a link to watch this on Youtube should that be the format you wish to use when delivering this quiz. The powerpoint is entirely editable but should take around twenty five mins to complete depending on the age of your students.

A sample version of a quiz I made, students figure out English idioms and pictograms. The full version has general knowledge questions, identify the sound, pictogram and emogi stages and is fully editable, there are 20 questions in total and should take at least 40 mins to complete depending on your student’s ability. it can be found here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/quiz-12442955 a supporting video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61tMXwCgcV0&t=57s where students can go through the quiz either in class or at home, answers are included at the end of the video.

Quiz on general knowledge/current events and Maths and English, a great way to break the ice and get students thinking, or a good warm down before the end of term, the types of question are: General knowledge Pictograms for maths questions Emojis for English idioms Sound clips Picture rounds There are twenty questions in total and each one is a little bit different from the rest to keep students engaged. Can be used for any lesson where the inferring skill needs to be developed. Includes: A reading comprehension on a descriptive text. Exam practice for Edexcel GCSE English language creative writing section. Focuses on the skills and the language/layout techniques students need to know. We look at GOMASSIVE techniques for language and we look into dialogue , narrative voice ect for structure. The text is ‘The Tell Tale Heart’ by Edgar Allen Poe, all other resources and tasks are editable. The lesson is scaffolded with quick tasks for students to develop their confidence before looking at the exam, Edexcel even have a full mock exam based on this extract should you wish students to attemot the full thing by themselves after having this. Lesson should take a little over two hours.

An English lesson based on Remembrance Day for AQA GCSE English paper 2 or any persuasive writing task. Students are shown and practice the following skills: Sentence variation Structure of paragraphs and discourse markers DAFORREST techniques How to write a letter in the correct layout. Includes a speaking and listening task on the orals and principles of war, which builds up to a writing task where students have to respond to a letter where they have been conscripted. The lesson has been designed to last about two hours if given the time to complete a full letter. All resources are editable.

A lesson to suit Black History Month. The lesson is based on speech writing with a focus on Martin Luther King. Looks into DAFORREST techniques and King’s use of symbolism. Then goes into how to use verbs and adjectives to make the writing more powerful. Goes into detail on how to write speeches and looks into today’s modern problems around the globe so that students can choose a topic of their own to express their views on. The lesson should last around two hours, all resources are editable, can suit any lesson that needs to teach persuasive writing.

Includes: A reading comprehension that I wrote, that is fully editable to suit the needs of your students, of a short scary story. The origins of Halloween - this goes into why people trick or treat, the story behind Jack O ’ lanterns and the historical and religious significance of the celebration. Youtube video and slide explaining. A short quiz on Halloween.

An assembly on Black History Month with this year’s theme of voting. The resource gives a task where students are made to consider how it would feel to be treated differently because of your appearance or identity. Then there is an explanation of the context in which the civil rights movement was going on in and we look at the importance of the right to vote. The second task is a true or false activity about the rights of African American people during this time, to help students understand the signifcance of the rights they fought for. The third task is where students watch a clip from Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream speech’ and talk about what the term 'all men (and women) being born equal". The forth task is a matchup activity where students are shown the photos of four people of African descent and are asked to name them and asked what achievements thry are known for. The next slides give a breakdown of these key people and explains why they are important. The final task is a look into ‘I know why the caged bird sings’, students are played the video of people reading it and the meaning is explained. This can be adapted to being a lesson, it has 17 slides in total and is fully editable if you wish to delet anything. I have included a task which I also used in my BLM lesson which I thought was a great tool for showcasing the civil rights movements in America. The only thing I havent included is the full speech of MLK and the poem because these are freely avible but I was unsure about putting them on here for copywright concerns.

Reading for information is about teaching students how to extract particular pieces of information from a text. Its a functional skill that enables them to use English for everyday life, things like looking at holiday deals and train timetables. I’ve put all the resources on one sheet and included a separate answer sheet so that it can easy to follow for home learning. Some of the texts are based on crime and punishment. It covers: Fact and opinion Skimming and scanning Some speaking and listening opportunity in the form of a class debate using information on crimes and punishments. Exclamation marks and possessive apostrophes. Further learning is included with a separate document and a skimming and scanning video.

Black lives matter - looking at the history of the civil rights movement of African American people and an introduction to some of History’s most significant contributers to the civil rights movement. Employability - an English focused lesson aimed at improving students employment skills. Growth Mindset - Looks at how to think in a way that helps success and happiness. Looks at case studies, differentiated questions with a video and a mindset quiz. Murder mystery - uses Maths and English clues to solve the murder. Socially distant icebreakers - Personality quiz and other tasks that can be completed online. Create your own superhero - A step by step guide to creating your own superhero. Zombie lesson - An English based lesson looking at a zombie survival. All resources are fully editable and a great way to start the year.

A full lesson on comparing texts based on theme of Police power. Task 1 - using quotes Task 2 - A Padlet debate on in class debate depending on home learning or in school. Task 3 - Comparing texts comprehension questions Task 4 - spelling patterns explanation and tasks looking at ‘tion and sion’ patterns, suffixes that end in Y and plural suffixes. Task 5 - Plenary students choose one of three options in order to express their opinion on police powers. Answers included and all worksheets have been put on one editable document so that it can be used for home learning or in the class. I made this for level 1 functional skills but it can be applied to different year groups.

A lesson on growth mindset where students learn about the benefits of positive thinking and that most things can be achieved through hard work and dedication. Students also learn about a fixed mindset way of thinking which can be a barrier to success. Activities include Growth or fixed mindset quiz - to see if students are too ridgid in their thought process. Case study of two individuals facing adversity - students select which one is growth and which one is fixed and try to explain why this is. Speaking and listening activity - Students watch a video on growth mindset and fill in a worksheet to see what information they understood, the questions are red, amber and green for differentiation and for students to take on a challenge. Writing to advise activity - students look at a few scenarios of where people with a fixed mindset are asking for help.
