This is a 110 page PowerPoint that can be used in the delivery of Functional Skills Reading Level 2. This PPT includes everything learners need to know in order to pass their reading assessment (it is based on the level NCFE awarding body criteria). The PPT gives learners an overview of the following: Skimming and Scanning Layout Features Purpose of a Text Fact or Opinion Bias Main Point of a Text Summarising Tone and Style Compare and Contrast Language Techniques Words and Phrases Expressions Following an introduction and a brief explanation of each of the above, examples are then given. Following this, practice exam questions (that are either taken from the NCFE practice examinations or have been created by myself) are then shown on screen. Learners can answer these questions using small whiteboards or as a group. Suggestions on how to answer the questions are shown and this is followed by the answer to the question being revealed.

This 131 page Powerpoint is aimed at Entry 3 - Level 1 learners. I call this lesson ‘back to basics’ and usually teach all of its content on day one of my course. I call it ‘primary and secondary’ school English rolled into three hours. It goes over the basic SPAG that they will need to know before they start writing for the writing module. It is a refreshers guide on the following: How to use syllables as a strategy to spell difficult words How to use a dictionary quickly and correctly What is a plural What is a prefix and what is a suffix What is verb tense How to use punctuation correctly Homophones and how to tell the difference between them Each section is a step by step guide that will help your learners to re-learn all the basic English skills that they need. There are different quizzes in the Powerpoint including: what punctuation marks are missing from these song words/song titles and spell the following word by breaking the word down into syllables…plus many more… I have designed the Powerpoint so that all learners can get involved. Just give them a white board and they can answer the questions as you read them out - great for differentiation. A practice exam question ‘scenario’ is given. It also includes a visual step by step guide on how to use word association to generate ideas.

A great starter for a Functional Skills English Lesson

This is an 18 page fun task booklet based on the book: Gangsta Granny. I created this booklet for my KS3 English reading class ( but can be used with KS2 students). This is an English Functional Skills reading revision guide that has been written for learners who will be taking the level 1 reading assessment. The guide includes an overview of all the information they will need to know in order to pass this assessment ( based on the NCFE level 1 assessment). This is given to my learners before their assessments and has helped them a lot.

A 13 page PPT Lesson. This lesson aims to prepare learners for their L1/L2 writing exam. As a class, they will discuss a sample question and the tutor will show them a basic answer. The tutor will then show learners how to bulk out their writing: in order the meet the exam’s word count criteria. There is then a practice question ( an article) and tips on how to answer this question. This PPT should cover an hour session.

A fun English game designed for my KS3 class to help them with their creative writing. The board contains a series of 5 prompts which will allow the learner to build their short gothic story: setting, main character, spooky object, main theme and conflict. Give the student a dice piece. They will roll the dice piece 5 times moving from left to right of the board. For example: The first number refers to the setting, the second number rolled refers to the story’s main character…etc… The learner will then write a short story based on what they rolled on the prompt board.

A revision sheet on how to format different types of text that the learner might have to write in their English Functional Skills exam. These can also be cut and laminated and used as revision cards.

An English Reading Comprehension Skimming & Scanning Activity. This would be ideal for E3 Functional Skills learners and pupils in the KS3 & KS4 age groups. Based on the topic of LGBTQ+, learners will read a source document before answering 8 skimming and scanning questions based on the source document. Answers are provided so learners can self mark.
