Add a level of accountability to your group work by simply infusing this student friendly assessment each time. With up to five peers, (or four if you want to including students reflecting on themselves) students will evaluate their peers in four key areas. Each area has a 1, 2, and 3 totaling a possibility of a max of 12 for each partner. These areas include participation, behavior, on task, and work. This is a great way for the students to feel responsible for their actions as well as for the teacher to gain insight into each student's contribution.

Check out this awesome tracking form that transfers the accountability and ownership over grades to the student. This can either be housed by them or keep with you, but the intention is that students record their scores for each assessment throughout the current grading period. Up top, they will list the name of the assessment and their grade. At the bottom, they will add a point on their line graph to track change over time. Aligned with Leader In Me's idea go beginning with the end in mind, this interactive and student-centered research projects, pushes students to think through some of the details of their next steps. Pushing students being just saying they want to be an NFL player or a police officer, this week long project pushes students through a variety of areas of research focusing on what they want to be when the grow up, where they want to go to college, the various expenses affiliated with living on your own in college, the expenses of living in a certain area, and then the necessary grades and other components that colleges look for. Using websites like glassdoor.com and various college websites will massively support students with this project. Hopefully their findings ground them in what their next steps look like and push them to apply math skills, research skills, reading skills, and ultimately help plan for their future!
