AQA Geography A level hazards resource.
This is a model answer for the essay question below:
With reference to a local scale of a specific place in a hazardous setting, assess the extent to which the physical nature of hazards can shape the character of a community and its ability to respond to risk. (20 marks)
I have written this question and model answers to help students revise this section of the course:
Case study at a local scale of a specified place in a hazardous setting to illustrate the physical nature of the hazard and analyse how the economic, social and political character of its community reflects the presence and impacts of the hazard and the community’s response to the risk.
Having looked at the textbooks for the section, I felt that the materials on offer were not very effective. Therefore, I have created this document with a model question and answer as well as supporting web links that have maps and diagrams that can be effectively used to create an ‘analyse’ type question. This resource has been seen by an AQA advisor who confirms that it effectively teaches this element of the course.
This resource will require a one hour lesson and homework to teach with.
Three resources in one document that will need two one hour lessons to complete or one lesson followed by homework. This has been written for the teaching the new AQA A level Geography however this unit is also found within the other A level Geography specifications.
Resource 1 - Sorting activity related to the carbon and water cycle. This helps with synoptic links and includes a section that links the water cycle to carbon fluxes by volcanoes.
Resource 2 - Model answer for the following question - Assess the extent to which there are interrelationships between processes in water cycle and factors driving change in the carbon cycle. (20 marks)
Resource 3 - An alternative question with a plan to help students to apply knowledge from one essay question to another. This helps them to develop their skills in applying their knowledge to different questions.
Model answer to go with the following AQA 20 mark Geography essay question.
With reference to a multi-hazardous environment that you have studied, assess the view that the underlying cause(s) leading to the hazards is human activity rather than physical factors.
Global systems and global governance
Model answer to the following essay question. This can be used for ideas and makes a good revision task for Year 13.
Analyse the roles of international government organisations and NGOs in the governance of Antarctica and assess their effectiveness. 20 marks
Please download to access the whole essay.
Globalisation teaching activity and model answer for the new A level Geography curriculum.
To what extent do the advantages of globalisation outweigh the disadvantages? [20] (or 25 marks under WJEC)
AQA are yet to release a direct globalisation essay question so I have taken this question from an exam paper released by WJEC. This is still from the new A level.
The resources I have created consist of:
A sorting activity which encourages students to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of globalisation for TNC’s, NEE/LIC’s and HIC’s.
A model answer for students to examine. This model answer helps to show students how to apply knowledge and create an introductory paragraph as well as an evaluative conclusion.
Assess the relative usefulness of the Park Model and the Hazard Management cycle in understanding the impacts of seismic hazards. (20 marks)
To what extent do you agree that the impact of volcanic activity can be mitigated against more effectively than tropical storms? 9 marks
Exemplar answers to both these questions.
Model answer and task to go with the following essay question:
Assess the extent to which rising global temperatures may result in a positive feedback cycle of yet higher carbon content in the atmosphere. (20 marks)
In 2018, AQA set a 20-mark essay question concerning the water cycle. Therefore, this year I have decided to pay greater attention to the carbon cycle. This resource will effectively help students to review their knowledge of carbon fluxes and feedback loops.
Model answers for the coast section of the AQA Geography exam of 2018.
Include model answers for:
03.1 - Outline the processes, which lead to the development of barrier beaches. (4)
03.2 Analyse the data shown in figure 5. (6)
03.3 Using Figure 6a, Figure 6b and your own knowledge, assess the potential impact of these changes on coastal landform development in this area. (6)
03.4 Assess the relative importance of weathering and erosion in the development of coastal landscapes. (20)
A level Geography carbon and water cycle resource.
Included:
Model answer to this question:
With reference to a river catchment that you have studied, assess the potential impact of human activity upon the drainage basin. (20 marks)
Support tasks to help students to prepare for this question.
This teaching resource helps students to consider the role of human and natural causes in the formation of sand dunes at Camber Sands. This resource helps students to assess and evaluate in order to prepare for typical nine and twenty mark questions that are set by AQA.
Model answer for the following AQA 20 mark A level question.
‘In a globalising world the use of the global common of Antarctica can never be sustainable.’ How far do you agree with this view?
Tasks have been created to go with the model answer.
‘The Disaster Response Curve (The Park Model) has contributed to improved understanding and therefore management of the impact of tectonic hazards.’
To what extent do you agree with this view? [20 marks]
Students I teach find it difficult to evaluate the Park model and as AQA released an example of this in relation to tropical storms, I have decided to create a tectonic version instead.
The first version of the essay contains too much content and I use this to get students to discuss the validity of the arguments in each paragraph. Students then decide on which paragraphs should be omitted. The second page of the source contains the edited version with an outline of table that students can use to summaries the advantages and disadvantages of the model.
Evaluate the view that mitigation strategies are more important than adaptation strategies in addressing the risks posed by the degradation of the carbon cycle. (20) Edexcel 2018 (PHYSICAL SYSTEMS AND SUSTAINABILITY)
This resource includes an exemplar essay that has been written with guidance from the mark scheme.
This resource also includes links to wider reading material and supportive tasks that will help students to examine the key elements of the essay.
This question originates from Edexcel however, the content overlaps with the AQA specification.

AQA AS style question:
Assess the extent that coastlines of submergence have been created by sea level change. (9 Marks)
I have used this question and model answer to encourage students to consider discussion type questions concerning formational processes. This task helps students to examine the ‘bigger picture’ that is needed to gain higher grades.
Assess the role of transport pathways in the development of coastal landforms. (9)
Model answer to the question above and tasks to support students in helping to assess the processes in landform development.
