Excellent resource, outlining in four short paragraphs a series of Italian traditions and customs for New Year's Eve. Document includes a short text, a series of questions in English to consolidate understanding, answers to the questions and helpful vocabulary. The text is adapted from a longer article online (link on worksheet) and can easily be lengthened if not challenging enough for group. I use this with a year 7 and a year 10 Italian class, both several months into their Italian language studies. Acts as a great springboard for further discussion and cultural comparisons, and introduces them to a range of authentic vocabulary. A perfect first lesson back in January, topical and interesting.

Excellent resource, perfect as a first lesson back after the holidays. Two-page article (link included on document) exploring French New Year traditions and presenting lots of opportunities for cultural discussion. Article is split into sections for ease of reading and discussion. Examples of cultural interest include the French tradition of sending New Year greeting cards, the annual televised French presidential address on 31 December, the change in date of the first day of the new year over the centuries, and the significance of 'l’Épiphanie' and 'la galette des rois'. Worksheet asks students to draw out synonyms from text for specific vocabulary (e.g. 'les moufles' - 'les gants'), and to respond to six questions in French related to these customs. Fully differentiated for LA learners with a vocabulary table and sections of the text signposted in brackets to support with answering the questions. These can easily be deleted for HA learners. Questions can be extended with reference to the subjunctive and other grammatical elements of the text. Students could also be asked to summarise in 100 words the main differences between traditional French New Year celebrations and those of their home country.

Excellent resource, can be used as 1-2 lessons depending on ability of group and how much time you wish to spend on cultural exploration of festive traditions. Text is taken from radins.com and is titled 'Noël en France : Noël typique et traditions régionales'. Link to article is included on worksheet. The article compares festive traditions in Alsace/Lorraine and Provence. It has been very slightly adapted and is split into paragraphs for ease of reading and discussion. Questions ask students to consider what type of text they are reading, then to match ten words highlighted in text to the correct description to develop language (for example 'Le Réveillon - le 24 décembre). Third and final exercise is six questions contrasting and comparing traditions in both regions, linking to culinary traditions, Père Fouettard / Père Noël and nativity scenes amongst others. Fully differentiated - two comprehensive vocabulary tables are provided to support learners who would benefit. A great lesson, genuinely interesting, and a fun way to include KS5 students in Christmas fun whilst still challenging their linguistic and cultural knowledge! I learned a few things making it! Next step could be for students to research and present to the class how Christmas is celebrated in other parts of the Francophone world. A great time saver, took three hours to make! Article and questions are one file, answers to all of the questions is the second. Could also be used for high-achieving KS4 class.

Two worksheets, suitable for younger learners of French, asking them to colour in shapes on a Christmas tree and/or Snowman template, according to the directions given. The Christmas tree template has six simple instructions and the image is simpler to colour. The Snowman template has ten instructions, referring to items of clothing (ses gants, son chapeau) as well as numbers and shapes, and the image is more detailed. Perfect to re-cap some shapes, numbers and colours towards the end of term, and to introduce some Christmas vocabulary (bauble, holly etc.). Extension could be for pupils to draw their own Christmas tree / Snowman and label.

Great fun for the students, they're working independently and assimilating cultural knowledge, and really enjoyable to teach!

Excellent resource, adored by students, to track and chart progress. Set up to be used for grammar ('er', 'ir', 're', modal verbs and so on), but can be adapted to suit any learning objectives. Students are assigned a character and given a grid at the start of term, or half-term, depending on how many objectives you wish to cover. After each objective has been covered, they circle the traffic light for that square to represent their confidence and understanding - green for very confident, amber for okay but a little unsure, and red if they feel they still don't understand. Very useful for teacher to glance over, to set activities in class as groups, or differentiated homework / prep. A fabulous insight into the progress of students individually and as a class that is subtle and fun for them. In my experience they are very honest too as only they and you see the grid, rather than asking for thumbs or coloured cards to be held up in class.

Differentiated number-challenge starter (one slide), presenting learners with three levels of puzzle increasing in difficulty. Students are given a number at the start of each puzzle and asked to work out a series of sums (all in French) to end up with the final answer. Puzzles very similar to daily 'Brain Trainer' challenge in The Times. All animations and answers on slide. Puzzles use double and triple-figure numbers, therefore most suitable for HA KS3 / KS4. Excellent numeracy and cross-curricular links between MFL and maths. A great time saver, took an hour make and format! Can be adapted and used over and over again with different ages. 'Challenge' option asks students to research the difference between 'chiffre', 'nombre' and 'numéro'.
