Year 2 Maths number Problems
Partitioning into tens and ones for Greater Depth Reasoning. Here is an example of the problems presented;
Adam thinks 2 tens and 13 ones is greater that 40. Is he right? Explain your answer. Children develop from fluency to reasoning to show greater understanding in this activity.
There are also differentiated resources for SEN to access similar objectives using concrete models and then moving onto pictorial form. Useful for the new maths ITAF statements and evidence for books and moderation. Part of the new national curriculum for maths.
Year 2 Maths arithmetic
This is a 40 page publisher document designed to increase fluency in mental maths. It can be used as and excellent visual aid for a maths meeting wall designed to recap and revise on all the addition, subtraction, division and multiplication taught. There are also opportunities for number bonds, doubling, solving varied fractions, part- part whole number problems and adding multiples of 10 to any number. This resource can also be used as a mental oral starter or as morning work to evidence mental calculations for the expected mastery standards. Suitable for year 2 curriculum in maths and supports evidence for moderations.
This document is to support teachers with feedback and marking. There is an example Powerpoint of good quality feedback and the pedagogy behind it - with children's work, next step marking, self assessment ideas and positive feedback language. There is also a bank of 'Next Step Marking' ideas that have been created to support teachers in their feedback to children that allow independence in revising their work. If marking is over explicit, then parts of the writing may be disqualified. It is highly recommended not to over mark and train children to understand teacher feedback e.g. Use varied sentences for effect on the reader/audience (means that the child has to use questions, commands, statements and exclamatory sentences). The detail in brackets is displayed in the classroom and given as verbal feedback to child. They then go away and improve their writing accordingly. This documents will give you more open bank of statements to use in your next steps (so moderators can't say the feedback was too explicit), and not use that piece of work as evidence for the child meeting the expected criteria (or above greater depth). Suitable for KS1, but can be easily adapted to Year 3 also. Hope you find it useful for your teams and use it to promote independent editing, revising and improvement of work. Linked to English 2018 TAF.
2d shapes
Exploring properties of shape with a fun shadow making activity. Children can learn about the properties of regular, simple 2d shapes as well being extended to naming and creating new irregular shapes. The powerpoint demonstrates how to uses torches to create shadow shapes, and differentiated activities allow for children to sort shapes, into different types of tables (e.g carol diagrams and ven diagrams). Relevant questions suitable for testing reasoning about shape can also be found in the powerpoint.
Year 2 open ended challenge. Can also be used for Year 1 HAPs children to show application of number bonds to 20. Good group work activity and allows for children to demonstrate their reasoning skills. Teachers will be able to use AFL during the activity to see which children are confident with their bonds to 10,20 and 50. Can be easily differentiated by using counters for less confident children and changing some of the rules, e.g you can use any number more than once. Great for group work or individual assessment task. Encourages working systematically and talking about maths to show thinking.
The former AST title has been replaced by the new SLE- Specialist Leader in Education. You may be endorsed by your headteacher to apply for any specialism e.g. a core subject English, Maths, Science, Assessment or NQT mentor, EYFS specialist. It could also be a foundation subject you specialise in. You will already be an outstanding practitioner and supporting colleagues in your own school or have had experience in supporting other schools in your chosen area of expertise. If you are passionate about being a leader of education and supporting other managers to lead then you need to prepare for a group discussion and an interview. See the attached PowerPoint for guidance of questions and supporting materials in how to prepare. Be an outstanding role model in your subject, be a good listener and inspirational, be confident and be the next specialist leader of education. Good Luck.
Year 1 and 2 cursive handwriting class posters.
Suitable as part of classroom display around the school to encourage good handwriting and presentation
Cursive print, correct formation and size of letters is encouraged.
This resource is useful as a guide for pupils and can also be available on table tops too.
A must for all pupils to understand the correct formation
Leaving spaces in between words
understand middle size letters and shape of capitals
Make sure that ascenders go under the lines and ascenders go up.
SPAG Rainbow Writing Code supports the Year 2 Grammar Washing Line. Please see the shop.
The code is to support children to edit their writing using the same colour each time. They locate each grammar feature in a given exemplar text and use colour pencils to identify them and/or underline them. Over the year the children can self assess and peer assess using this rainbow grammar code. Eventually, by the end of the year, the aim is for the children to be able to identify all the writing grammar features in their own writing or up level it and edit if they haven’t. VCHOP stands for Vocabulary, Conjunctions, Handwriting, Openers and Punctuation. This resources supports the new National Curriculum for 2014 English Writing objectives.
Comparing amounts using < > and = in the context of length , mass and fractions. Children are encouraged to use jottings to solve each side of the equation. They then use the correct symbol to balance the equation. Suitable for year 2 mastery level although the activities are differentiated and easily accessible to all. Year 2 New Maths Curriculum.
Year 2 tell the time by showing where the hour hand and the minutes hands. Children need to be confident in telling the time before they use this activity. They must understand that the hour hand is the small hand and the long hand is the minutes hand. The resource will enable them to count in fives around the clock and understand how to calculate for example 20 minutes past 9. A differentiated resource for all children to reach the expected standards (S) in maths for the new curriculum.
Year 2 Grammar washing line in cursive script - for all sentence types.
These are posters of all the sentences types that are in the expected standard for English. They are a good reference for teachers and children. The posters have definitions and show examples of how to use them in context. Ideally they should be enlarged onto A3 paper, laminated and hung from a visible area for all to access. Alternatively they can be made into a handy booklet for children to access as a resources to up-level their work by editing gaps. Suitable for year 2 and the new curriculum.
Year 2 Maths Number
A bundle of resources to teach place value using practical resources and equipment, and pictures to show what each number represents. The children move onto comparing numbers using < > symbols. They also understand how to compare three given numbers using more than, less than, tens and units .
Finally, the complete number sequences in 2, 3, 5, from any given number forwards and backwards. The resources are differentiated and well organized with graphics and tables to support learning. Most of the resources ask children to explain and reason e.g how they know which number is greater to show they have mastered the skill.
Grammar washing line in cursive script suitable for the year 2 curriculum in writing.
This is all the definitions of grammar features that are in the expected standard for English.
They are a good reference for teachers and children and can be placed on working walls or washing lines.
The posters have definitions and how to use them in context.
Ideally they should be enlarged onto A3 paper, laminated and hung from a visible area for all to access. Alternatively they can be made into a handy booklet for children to access as a resources to up-level their work by editing gaps.
Suitable for year 2 and the new national curriculum.
Explore properties of shape through this fun activity. The resources shows how children can make different animals using a tangram template. The children explore how to make an animals with the given 9 shapes and one rule- at least one side of each shape must be touching. After children have had a go, some may find it challenging so they can be shown the animals slide after. This lesson would be suitably linked to growth mind set challenges. There are also slides that show different ways of questioning knowledge about 2d shapes SATs style.
A fun and interesting activity to consolidate adding three numbers including one 2 digit number. Children should have secure prior knowledge of adding mentally using different strategies such as doubling or counting in different steps. The task can be easily differentiated for all abilities. It offers good opportunity for teachers to facilitate the learning whilst watching how children apply learnt skills. They should be encouraged to be resilient, use trial and error and work systematically to find more than one answer. They should demonstrate reasoning skills by explain e.g how they made the total 29 using two shapes only with a value of 5 and 12. This make AFL easier for the teacher. A highly recommended task.
Year 2 Maths Shape and Space
A powerpoint showing how to make 3d shapes using the faces of 2d shapes. There a vast array of resources including tables to identify properties of shapes to making a net of regular 3d shapes. Be creative and see if you can make a cube net using some of these resources;
spaghetti and marsh mellows or straws and blu tac ,or using construction toys
Children in year 1 should identify how many 2d shape faces they can find on a 3d shape. They should locate shapes in the environment and label them.
In year 2 children will be identifying properties of 3d shapes such as vertices, edges, right faces, number of 2d shapes needed for a net etc. They should also compare one 3d shape with another one and discuss what is same and different.
Year 2 Maths - Numebr with a focus on Division
Learning to divide and share . children solve dividing equally by 2,5, 3, 4, and 10. They use the step count method to help them solve the missing number. This strategy relies on children being good at counting in steps of the above numbers mentioned. They understand how to solve division quickly using this method and can move onto applying it to division with remainders. The powerpoint has clear explanations as to how this method can be used. Very useful in a year 2 setting for all abilities. Children working at greater depth show their reasoning by using the inverse.
An excellent resource to show challenge for all.
year 2 National Curriculum
Teaching mastery of money comes with solving mixed operation word problems.
In this resource you will find differentiated resources for children to solve problems e.g
Find 2 coins with the value higher than double 3.
Find 3 coins with the value of 63. Now find another way.
Adam shares all the coins equally with a friend - how many do they get each?
Adam thinks he has enough money to buy a spider plant worth 195p. Is he correct?
Suitable for childen working ARE in the year 2 national maths curriculum. Great opportunties also for HAPs children to work with numbers beyond 100 and show greater depth mastery skills.
Adding and subtracting on a number line including finding the difference. An excellent array of worksheets differentiated according to structured numberline in 5’s 10’s or in 1’s. Can be easily edited to move on to different scales for year 2 e.g. jumping in steps of 3s , 4s or 10s. Children can start from practical resources using bead strings and number lines and then move on to pictorial and abstract form when ready. Very good for EAL learners and SEN learners.
Great visual resources suitably differentiated for year 1. Read the Blue Balloon and sequence the pictures and use time connectives to retell. Write a list and captions using words to describe the balloon changing shape. Link to the new curriculum and used expanded noun phrases and or adjectives. Use phonics and sounds to match words to pictures. As creative starters to the unit -teachers can write a message on a helium balloon from each child and release in outdoor playground - ‘This balloon is indestructable. Please look after it!’ Wait and see if anyone replies to the message. Blow up a balloon and release in hall for inspiration to dance and movement in P.E. Also includes ideas for problem solving in maths using balloons as inspiration.
