Guided Reading Year 2. Whole class teaching and group discussion.
This is as outstanding resource for you to use with your whole class. It has been cleverly organized and written so that all children can access the wonderful story. The resource is designed to be taught as a whole a class activity. The teacher supports reading of the text and children answer questions collaboratively, and learn from each others responses. Teachers are required to teach skimming and scanning techniques, read around the word, answer literal and clue questions, as well as evaluative summary questions. The resource has high expectations of all children and builds high level vocabulary. This will support you to show evidence of greater depth text. It s important to have class copies of text for group discussion.
Two excellent and engaging resources for the Materials topic in science. The lessons are enquiry based and suitable for year 2 and lower keystage 2. Can be used towards the end of the unit after children understand properties of materials, sorting materials, waterproof materials and that the same material have many uses. This resource can be used for an Arctic topic to find out how animals like polar bears and penguins keep warm (blubber investigation). The second investigation sets about finding out which materials can stop the ice from melting. Both comparative tests are fun for year Ks1 and low ks2 children. Lots of language, discussion, science vocabulary and assessment can be done by the teacher facilitating these activities. Suitable for the new Science curriculum - practical and hands on. ENJOY. Great inquiry lessons can be used for science quality mark evidence.
The Tunnel by Anthony Browne is a fantastic resource written for guided reading sessions that use a carousel format. Planning included teacher questioning as well as comprehension for children to access independently. Excellent text to use because

There are opportunities to develop and explore characters thoughts, feelings, emotions and motivations through dialogue and speech. Vocabulary is enhanced through extending vocabulary through description and alliteration.

Year 2 Reading and Writing- poetry New English Curriculum
This fabulous resources has an array of classic poetry with comprehensions.
The sound collector has differentiated comprehension for higher ability (working at greater depth) and then differentiated down so that all the class can access and enjoy classic poetry. Children answer literal, inference and evaluative questions about the poem. After that , they spend a day creating their own verses using similar pattern structures.
There are also other many fun and enjoyable poems to learn and perform by Roger McGough, and Valerie Bloom- such as The River, and other sound poems. Children can recite these, perform them and offer opinions about them. Children will learn how to identify rhyming words and generate their own. They will understand language techniques used by the poet and create their own verse.
This resource can also be used as a poetry unit during English main teaching or guided reading. It will be good evidence for greater depth reading and writing.

Where the wild things are by Maurice Sendak English writing unit.
Use this fantastic resource suitable for year 2. Closely linked with the national curriculum year 2 TAFs for the expected level and beyond. Pupils will be able to write creatively using inspiration from the book such as narrative, diary writing and instructions.
The main genre focus is instructional writing in a creative way.
The resource includes an exemplar instructional text called how to trap a wild thing. Pupils can use this as a guide to write their own instructions such as how to tame a dragon, or how to become a kind of the wild things.
Daily lesson plans and differentiated resources are included in the unit that is over 5 weeks. Reading is also embedded in the unit to develop comprehension of the exemplar text.
Pupils are encouraged to internalize the text by using a text map.

This is a bundle resource designed to be made into a practical Velcro tape folder. Each page has missing boxes that children have to choose the answer which is on the adjacent page. Each page will need to be laminated with Velcro attached to the answers so that children can manipulate the resource practically. It is useful as a pre-teach tool, revision guide or as an early morning work folder. The resource is designed to be an aid to guide independence in maths once the activity has been previously taught in class. There are opportunities for children to match properties of shape, recognise numbers in order, place value recognition, o’clock and half past times, sequencing number, doubles, counting in steps of 2,5,10, arrays with repeated addition, comparing numbers, part- part -whole, bonds to 10, and adding money. Year 2 Writing Unit - linked to TAFs
Stories with a twist for Year 2 Traditional stories Unit. This is an excellent bundle of useful resources that can be easily adapted to different areas of writing - from narrative, to character description to even further write a forest setting. All of the example texts incorporate the New National curriculum Grammar objectives for Year 2 writing. DT in year 3 and Year 4. Linked to the Primary National Curriculum objectives. Pupils will design and make healthy Granola Bars in this project. This is a half term unit of work with 5 lesson plans, PowerPoints for pupils and lesson resources like design decision table, visuals for support and a recipe card to follow in writing as well as instructions with visuals. The Tunnel by Anthony Browne English Writing Unit.
An excellent 2 week unit of work for KS1/Year 2 to teach about bravery, sibling rivalry, compassion, similarities and differences. Rose is afraid of the unknown but she faces her fears to rescue her brother.
This unit teaches diary writing, poetry, and creative narrative writing. It is suitable for year 2 , (although easily adaptable to years below) and closely matched to the TAFS and standards. There is an example of writing provided for written lessons.
Lots of immersion activities are included so pupils can demonstrate empathy with the main character. This allows for pupils to write deeply and creatively and for Haps to achieve greater depth.

Year 2 Narrative Unit to inspire greater depth and mastery writing skills. An excellent bundle of resources suitable for year 2 and year 3. Includes 5 weeks of planning for English and 5 separate grammar exercises within context of the book to be taught alongside it. A cold writing task begins with writing a narrative(fable) of a fox. An exemplar text is provided (re-written in the past tense to imitate and innovate). There are also other opportunities for independent creative writing pieces integrated in the unit so that children can practice skills and rehearse them independently. Book talk and comprehension activities are also included. The language in the text is ambitious as well as appropriate for children to achieve the TAF statements for the year 2 curriculum. This unit can be adapted to suit lower KS2. Links to films and short clips provide opportunities for non-fiction writing e.g. Recount of how fires start in forests or bush lands. If children have previous experiences of writing instructions- they can apply this by writing 'How to mend a broken wing' instructions or make wings for Magpie to fly in DT.
