Each of the five vowels /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/ and /u/ are tracked for individually. Then a collection of 3 letter words containing all 5 vowels need to be read. To read these words successfully the student needs to be able to discriminate between the 5 short vowels.

Topic 2 Short Vowel Door Activity An activity to demonstrate and explain the concept of closed syllables. A closed syllable has at least one letter after the vowel /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/ or /u/. The vowel is short and says its sounds as in /a/ for apple, /e/ for egg, /i/ for igloo, /o/ for octopus and /u/ for umbrella.

On completion a spelling test and dictation will assess the retention of these sounds.
