This is a lesson that is designed to develop higher level thinking on photosynthesis. This could be used at KS3 or GCSE and would fit into a scheme of work where the students have previously covered photosynthesis. In this lesson students are introduced to the thoughts of Thomas Malthus who said that resources (e.g. food) limit the growth of the population. Students are then given a task where they need to compare four plants and decide which plant they would recommend to farmers to grow. They need to justify their choice by referring to data from the sheets - such as saying that plants with longer root hairs will absorb more water and minerals or that plants with a greater density of chloroplasts would photosynthesis at a greater rate (assuming that CO2 etc are not limiting). This is a levelled checklist for graph skills that year 7 and 8 students should be able to do. I use this the second time that I teach year 7 graph skills. It helps promote inclusion. This is a worksheet that encourages students to make their own classification for invertebrates with the beginning of a classification tree provided at the bottom of the page.

The slides are printed as 6 slide handouts and then cut. Lower ability can compare patients 1 and 2. Higher ability can compare all patients. Patients 3 to 5 pose challenging ethical questions. Use Blooms questioning to further differentiate (compare L4, Justify L7).

This is a 2 part lesson sequence for B1 biology where in lesson 1 students research what diabetes and hypothermia are. They they then create a PowerPoint presentation to explain what homeostasis is and what causes these 2 diseases. In lesson 2 they complete their presentations plus present to the class. Presentations are assessed using a 10 point guide that assesses presentation skill and scientific understanding. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

I came across the idea for lesson menus from a CPD session that I attended and have since put them into over half of my total lessons. I am putting together a series of resources to help more able students in the classroom and I will be adding to this series over the coming year. This is an information sheet providing information on the bacteria involved in the nitrogen cycle. See my other resources for an exam tips handout that students can use as guidance.

This is a series of information sheets on the 3 main species of bacteria involved in the nitrogen cycle plus an overview of the cycle itself. Pupils may highlight keywords/ phrases and use this information to create a 6 mark exam question and mark scheme that another pupil answers. 1 mark should be for quality of writing.

This is a lesson plan for an ICT research skills lesson on the history of the cell. 2 timelines are given - one easy and one that is more challenging. Students present their research at the end of the lesson. Alternatively they could present their findings in a second lesson. This is a lesson on accuracy that I have designed for and taught to year 7. It can be readily modified to compare accuracy and reliability. It uses an ink pipette dart board as a practical (ink is dropped onto a laminated paper dart board). Feedback to rowan.savage@hotmail.com

This is a LO slide that can be easily modified to all key stages and classes. A photographic example of a students work is provided. The first column of boxes is completed at the start of the lesson. The second column is completed half way through. The last column is completed at the end during a plenary that makes use of the LOs. Pupils write R,O,G in the boxes and show their red, orange or green colour cards. The cards can be left on the table during the lesson so the teacher can check understanding.

This is a version of my teaching menu that I have modified for teaching assistants. It is most beneficial for independent learning and science practical lessons. The TA helps lower ability pupils earlier in lesson and higher ability pupils later in the lesson.

Templates are provided that can be readily modified. One template is a GCSE revision template where students are guided to create their own exam questions and peer edit answers. The second template is useful for writing Blooms-leveled answers at Key Stage 3 and includes a wordbank. The third is an AS Chemistry exam question with keyword glossary. All templates include written instructions for students. Peer editing is great when combined with AFL strategies before and after the activity.
