Year 9 GCSE Dance Taster: Shift 6 lesson delivery PowerPoint and Homework Handouts

(1)
This GCSE Taster : Shift 6 lesson delivery PowerPoint has been created for teachers of Dance preparing their Year 9 pupils for GCSE. Over the 6 lessons, pupils will explore the GCSE Set Dance: Shift along with appreciation tasks linked with section A of the written exam paper (component 2). E.g. The components of Dance (actions, dynamics, space and relationships), performance skills etc. PLEASE NOTE: I have created this resource to follow the GCSE Taster : Breathe 6 lesson SOW as some of the exam questions relate to the Breathe set dance. The Shift breakdown sections were created using the resources on the AQA website and print screened images of the YouTube video of Shift. The PowerPoint also includes starters (bell activities), lesson objectives, homework tasks and assessment material. This resource also includes homework handouts. Enjoy!

KS4 GCSE Dance Component 1: Set Phrase Shift 3 Week Delivery PP and homework booklet

(1)
This KS4 GCSE Dance Component 1: Set Phrase Shift 3 Week Delivery PP is for teachers of AQA GCSE Dance who are preparing their pupils for their Solo exam. The PowerPoint presentation set over approximately 3 weeks guides pupils though the set phrase: Shift, using all the resources that the AQA website provides; including still images from the video links and copied text from the breakdown tables. The PowerPoint is designed for ease of delivery and to answer pupils (and teachers) questions regarding the steps of the set phrase. I delivered this SOW by firstly asking pupils to get into groups of 3 and labelling themselves A, B and C. As would firstly come to the front to learn the phrase on the board that I would demonstrate and break down before returning to their group to teach the phrase to their group. Bs would learn the next phrase and Cs the final phrase. All 3 pupils would then work together to practice the section that they had learnt before a whole class performance to the metronome or a piece of music of 105bpm. I decided to do it this way to promote independence and increase self-confidence as both are extremely important for the successful delivery of the set phrases in the solo exam. I adapted the PowerPoint into a homework booklet so that pupils could take it home to practice. The homework booklet is included in this resource. The creation of the PowerPoint was very time consuming. Feel free to create your own or save a lot of time by downloading mine.

Level 3 BTEC Performing Arts Unit 2 Developing skills and techniques for live performance - Dance

This resource is for teachers of Level 3 BTEC Performing Arts, teaching Unit 2 Developing skills and techniques for live performance. I share a class with my colleague who focuses on Learning Aim A and Learning Aim B-D from a drama point of view. This resource is what I teach in my lessons, focusing on Learning Aims B-D from a dance point of view. The dance styles that I cover are Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary and then use sections of Alvin Ailey’s Revelations for the performance piece. This resource takes around 12x2hour lessons to teach. Alot of the resource has been created using the online specification and YouTube clips which all had active links at the time of publishing this resource. In the event of YouTube clips being taken down, I have added notes under some of the slides with advice. Feel free to use/adapt this resource to suit your own needs. Under the ‘log’ slides it says " Provide pupils with log guidance resource" I have not included this as what I use in class exists as a hard copy only. I hope you like this resource and it saves you time planning.

The Let It Grow SOW has been designed with high ability EYFS children in mind but could also be taught to KS1 children in relation to a ‘Plants’ topic. The 6 week SOW structures together a final performance about the plant cycle from seeds, into a flower and then returning once again to seeds. Throughout the 6 lessons, pupils will develop their spatial awareness and will be encouraged to use their creativity and imagination to explore different actions using the plant cycle as their stimulus. Within this resource there are 6 detailed 30 min lesson plans including: Aims and objectives, descriptions of activities (starter, warm up, main activity, plenary etc), Organisation information and ‘coaching’ points. For music, I use ‘Let it Grow’ from the movie ‘The Lorax’ that can be found on YouTube.

KS4 AQA GCSE Dance Revision – Component 2: 12 mark questions This resource has been designed for teachers of GCSE dance revising the dance anthology in preparation for the written exam. This lesson has been created to provide a way for dance students to revise in a fun and interactive way. There are many ways to use this resource: Make it into a game: print out the 1st slide and cut the boxes out. Pupils can pick the boxes at random and have a go at answering the questions on the second slide. Differentiation: You can pre pick the questions prior to the lesson based on your pupil’s strengths and areas of weakness to challenge your pupils appropriately. Print out the 2nd slide for them with their differentiated question on. Whole class activity: As a class decide on a question to tackle and discuss the question together before allowing the pupils to have a go at writing their answers. Homework revision: Print out the PowerPoint for your pupils to allow them to practice the 12 mark questions at home. Enjoy!

KS3 Dance - Year 8 - Musical Theatre 6 lesson SOL and Resources

Updated: 11/08/22 This ‘Musical Theatre’ 6 lesson SOL is for teachers teaching KS3 dance. This is a SOL that I use to focus on performance skills. I choreograph a whole class dance to ‘We Go Together’ from the musical Grease which I teach to the class lesson by lesson. There are also choreographic tasks. This is not a PowerPoint that you will be able to use unedited as the main activities are unique to my ‘We Go together’ choreographed piece. However, I have uploaded this resource to be used as a skeleton PowerPoint that can be edited for whichever musical theatre number you wish to use. Includes: • 6 lesson (60 min per lesson) delivery PowerPoint with: ‘Enquiry questions’, ‘Do Now’ activities, ‘TIF (Take It Further) challenges’, YouTube clips and level descriptors. • STAR marking grid • Mark sheet • Dance feedback toolkit

Encourage pupils to physically try out questions such as ‘describe one exercise a dancer can do to improve flexibility’ before putting it into words. Section 2 – Allow pupils 20 min to complete the test paper (total 20 marks). Encourage pupils to visualise themselves in the dance space when completing the test paper.

KS4 AQA GCSE Dance Revision – Component 2: Section C This resource has been designed for teachers of GCSE dance revising the dance anthology in preparation for the written exam. This lesson has been created to provide a way for dance students to revise in a fun and interactive way. Prior to the lesson, decide how you are going to divide your class into 6 groups (ideally a mixture of high and low ability in each group). Each group should be given a large piece of paper with one of the 6 dance anthology pieces written in the middle, then use the PowerPoint. I spent approximately 5 min per slide and got the pupils to rotate around the room rather than the paper. You will need the six anthology fact files found on the AQA GCSE Dance website for the latter part of the lesson. Once the lesson is complete you will have revision display posters created by the dance pupils themselves.

Teaching Transferable Skills (KS3 and KS2)

(0)
This resource contains 4 lessons dedicated to developing pupils transferable skills (communication, time management, creative problem solving and team work) though Performing Arts games and activities. Each lesson focuses on one of the 4 transferable skills (communication, time management, creative problem solving and team work). Each lesson is complete with starter activities (in the form of Bell tasks) and TIF tasks (take it further). I am a Performing Arts teacher but strongly believe that you do not have to be a Performing Arts teacher to deliver these lessons as each game is explained on the PowerPoint. I created these lessons after observing pupils in my class who didn’t appear to have the transferable skills that they needed to fully engage with the activities of my lessons. It dawned on me that we as teachers sometimes presume that pupils naturally have the transferable skills that we need them to have e.g. working in a group environment but we don’t tend to ‘teach’ them those transferable skills or dedicate lessons to help them develop such skills. So that’s exactly what I decided to to do. I created these lessons with my Year 8 classes in mind but I am sure year 7 and even primary school aged children would enjoy these lessons. My year 8s really enjoyed these lessons and I feel made an impact. I now often refer to them when teaching my normal curriculum lessons. e.g. "you have 5 min to complete this task, remember our time management lesson…’ This resource would also be good for PSHCE and for teachers teaching pupils with additional needs.

KS4 GCSE Dance Revision – Component 2: Choreography

(0)
This resource has been designed for teachers of GCSE dance revising choreography in preparation for the written exam. This lesson has been created to provide a way for dance students to revise in a fun and interactive way. Prior to the lesson, decide how you are going to divide your class into 6 groups (ideally a mixture of high and low ability in each group). After the starter activity on the PowerPoint give each group one of the texts as a stimulus. As a group, pupils can discuss how the text can be used to create choreography in relation to each of the questions on the PowerPoint (I allowed around 3 min per slide). Encourage pupils to write notes on the sheet with the text on as these can be used as posters in the classroom and/or be photocopied and given to all students for further revision. After pupils have completed notes for each of the questions, give pupils a copy of the questions as a mock test and allow pupils 20 min to complete the test using their text as their stimulus. Within this resource I have included the notes that my pupils made as an example.

KS1 Dance – Toys SOL

(1)
UPDATED AND IMPROVED ON 21/02/2022 This resource is for KS1 teachers teaching dance through the Physical Education part of the national curriculum during the topic of toys (or any topic connected to toys, gifts, celebration etc). This ‘Toys’ scheme of work is great to teach after the holiday season. It allows pupils to share their holiday experience through emotion and movement games along with developing their creativity through choreography tasks. This SOL comes with: 6 lesson plans, detailing the activities in each lesson along with coaching points to aid teaching. A 6 lesson PowerPoint including notes under each slide to help with the delivery of the lesson. A CPD document that should help with aspects of teaching dance that a none dance specialist might find helpful. Notes: The timings of the lesson and the activities within the lesson plans can of course be adapted. Activities can be changed, lengthened, shortened, taken out, differentiated etc. Feel free to adapt this resource to suit your own needs as well as the needs of the children. Feel free to use your own music. I used ‘Epic Music – Toys Come Alive’ on YouTube I loved teaching this SOL and I hope you do too. If you find it helpful, I would massively appreciate it if you could leave me a review 

KS1 Dance – Caribbean Calypso SOL

(0)
UPDATED AND IMPROVED ON 11/10/2021 This resource is for KS1 teachers teaching dance through the Physical Education part of the national curriculum during the topic of the Caribbean (or any topic connected to the Caribbean, holidays or Zumba). Calypso dance was formed in the islands of Trinidad and Tobago by African people enslaved in the Caribbean in the 1800s. They were treated very badly and had to work in horrific conditions. However, during their free time, they celebrated through singing and dancing and this is how the style began. Although then, the dance style was about telling stories through dance; today, Calypso dance moves are used in Zumba fitness routines as they are fun and energetic. I used Luis Fonsi, Stefflon Don – Calypso on YouTube. I loved teaching this SOL and I hope you do too. If you find it helpful, I would massively appreciate it if you could leave me a review
